"Private companies are and should be motivated by profits."
Not non-profit ones! Really, not everyone in this world is out to make a buck. Even big bad Republicans.
"Churches naturally have an adgenda in spreading their beliefs."
Some do, I don't doubt. I know the one I belong to helps the community with open doors, open hearts and open minds. We don't have to "approve" so to speak in order to help and love.
"Neither is in a position to provide across the board, comprehensive services to all comers."
In your opinion. And in mine, the government isn't in the position to provide across the board comprehensive services.
Seeing as how she was just called compassionless, I think it should be expected. Tolerated, perhaps not. But when lisa threw down that attack, I can understand why conservmom would respond in kind.
" I also think, though, that many people can NOT pull themselves up all on their own, no matter how much they may want it. They need some help. Now, that help doesn't have to have a monetary value - it could simply be emotional support that comes from someone who teaches you or encourages you to be a better person. But we all need someone. I don't think, for most of us, that we can become "successful" people without someone else.
As far as governmental involvement goes, I think it's necessary - to a point.
We need governmental programs, but they need to have limitations. They should be there to help, but not to the point that people become dependent upon them."
You are sounding more conservative by the post ;)
This is a compromise I can live with, but seriously, there needs to be better (more adhered to) limitations.
Not strict enough (IMO), adhered to, or monitored well enough. Abuse in and of the system is costly and affects those who truly need it.
Look...we "qualify" for lots of assistance but chose to leave it for those who "really" need it. THAT'S what I mean when I say it isn't strict enough. With all of our blessings (and hard work of course) we shouldn't qualify for what we do.

There are limitations to the current TANF program.
