"I just think the government can and should be one source of that help."
And that's our core political difference :) I believe the government should pretty much be restricted to providing national security (including border control), transportation safety and repair, law enforcement, fire and emergency services and public schools...individual help should come from private companies equipped to perform those services, churches, and individuals - NOT the government. Neither view point is evil - just different ways of achieving the same end.
>>>They had the natural IQ and likely exposure to successful people that lead them to accept the help.<<<
I completely disagree. How do you know that?! There are all sorts of success stories of people who weren't necessarily *smart* who did very well for themselves. And there are just as many stories of folks who were helped along the way...not by successful people...but by people who motivated them for one reason or another. Maybe they were motivated by parents who worked their tails off, yet were still poor. Maybe they were motivated by a neighbor who encouraged them to get a paper route for the summer.
>>>I just think the government can and should be one source of that help. <<<
The fact that you consider the gov't to be bootstraps explains a whole lot to me. The gov't programs are no longer the helpful agencies they were supposed to be. They are now a crutch for anyone and everyone who feels like taking the easy way out.
I can talk about stuff without having to imagine it; however, I choose not to air family woes on the very public internet. Please don't assume you know who I am or what I'm about. I assure you...you will be wrong

In all honesty I don't think private companies or churches are equipted to deal with these issues in any kind of a complete way.
>>>Everyone does not have the tools to actually attain more no matter how hard they strive.
Exactly. Bootstraps come from within. They are not actual *things*. They are part of who a person is.
