NPR has been holding their employees to some pretty high standards.

Two different points:

Fearing Muslims on a plane and a black man dressed in "thug gear" on the street are indeed both examples of bigotry. If you feel fear in either of these situation, then you should address your own bigotry not deny it. the first step to combating bigotry is recognizing it and combating it in ourselves.

Williams role at NPR was as a news analyst, which presume a certain amount of neutrality. He obviously has been crossing the line with his comments on FOX for some time. NPRs termination of Williams is consistent with their policy on not attending political rallies.

You make some great points!

I think we will be hearing about this one for several days. I heard a few moments ago that there has been a call on congress to revoke NPR's funding?

This article pretty much sums up my thoughts.

Not a response to you in particular Laura, just tacking on the end.

William's initially talked about not being able to discuss how he felt in the name of political correctness. If he would be nervous to date a woman who dressed in designer clothes and tons of jewelry and make-up, for fear she was a gold-digger, would he be a misogynist? If he said that he was always nervous around the elderly for fear they would suddenly die, would he be an ageist?

Williams' big issue was that such a statement was made in an environment where he wouldn't be challenged. Had he said something like that on PBS, there might have been a more temperate moderator who could talk through those statements, rather than letting Williams just stand there looking like a bigot.

As a matter of fact, I think that every talking head our there saying that Williams was punished for his relationship with FOX is pleased as punch by this turn of events, having quietly hated Williams for his connection to NPR. NPR blinked first.

Based on the interview you posted, Williams was an analyst, NOT a reporter. Every week, they interview or have analysis by a variety of public figures, including the right-leaning David Brooks. Certainly Brooks' own op-eds aren't always consistent with the standards of objectivity and castrated neutrality NPR now feels the need to project (apparently they think these edicts are easier than actually editing their content and providing more balance in their reporting).

As for Williams' expressed fears:

You will never open another person's eyes if you shut your own ears to them.

Well FOX has already signed him to a new contract. I sure everyone concerned is pleased with the whole outcome.

No matter what the example, admitting your bias is the first step to eliminating your bias.

Apparently The NPR Ombudsmen said on Talk of the Nation today that NPR should have handle the situation better. It doesn't air out here until the evening, so I haven't actually heard it. It will be interesting to read what she has to say about it.
