Obama shifts stance on offshore drilling

Senator Barack Obama has wavered in his position on offshore drilling, saying that he may be willing to compromise on the issue, the Associated Press reports. The presumed presidential candidate had previously announced his opposition to offshore drilling but said Friday he would consider supporting limited offshore drilling if that was the way to get policy enacted that promotes more fuel-efficient cars and the development of alternate energy sources.

With attack ads criticizing Obama’s aversion to the drilling even as gasoline prices rise to $4, Obama has reneged his opposition, hoping that a compromise could put an end to policy gridlock on energy issues. “My interest is in making sure we've got the kind of comprehensive energy policy that can bring down gas prices,” Obama said in an interview with the Palm Beach Post. “If, in order to get that passed, we have to compromise in terms of a careful, well thought-out drilling strategy that was carefully circumscribed to avoid significant environmental damage -- I don't want to be so rigid that we can't get something done.”

Oil and energy have been a hot debate topic the past several weeks, leading up to the five week Congressional hiatus coming up. Earlier House Leader Nancy Pelosi refused to cave in to pressure to allow a vote on offshore drilling. It is unclear how Obama’s recent switch in stance will affect the Congresswoman’s steadfastness.

“The Republicans and the oil companies have been really beating the drums on drilling,” Obama said in the Post interview. “And so we don't want gridlock. We want to get something done.”

There are millions in student loans that haven't been paid back and the govt. is very lax about collecting on them.

Patty~

I totally see what you are saying, but I tend to think it's much more personality driven. I have insurance where I don't pay a copay and I avoid the doctors offices as much as possible. When my kids get a fever, I don't even jump on the tylenol or the motrin! We are very good about going once a year for their well-child check ups, and if the kids have 2 or more symptoms at once, I will generally call the office and ask the advice nurse if she REALLY thinks this is something I need to take them in for. Frankly, I just don't have the time to be driving to and from, sitting in the waiting room, sitting in the exam room if I really don't HAVE to. I've also had doctors suggest a multitude of "tests" on my kids and when I inquired as to *why*, do you know what her first response was? "Well, you don't have to worry about paying for it or anything, it's totally covered by your insurance company." Can you say cha-ching?

Anyway, all that to point out that not all people with "free" insurance (and you know I use that term loosely) will wish to sit for hours on end just for a sniffle. Then again...maybe that's just my "personal-responsibility" conservatism coming out ;)

I wish I could be like you. I almost lost Zach a couple times in my pregnancy and he was premature so I am overly "rush him to the doctor" type of parent. I hardly ever go to the doctor myself, my dd is like a roach she never gets sick, and dh is never "sick" so we make up for ds.

Yes, if you are poor and intelligent, you can receive grants. there is a BIG difference between a GRANT and a Government student loan. If you have a government student loan and you are not making payments on it, they will and do garnish your wages for it,you cannot buy a home until the student loan is paid for(if you can't make the payments) on the loan, or if you default.<<<<

My husband's family had 3 teenagers at one time, not poor, but not wealthy.

Ahh yes, They do catch up with you though. My son's EX girlfriend's DH is such a person.

What a tool he is. He pays child support for two children he never sees, that's two children from two different woman. He thought he had a Government grant for his education, HAHa. it was a Government sponsored Student LOAN. He wasn't paying it back, sooooo they take it from his income tax refund.
