Senator Barack Obama has wavered in his position on offshore drilling, saying that he may be willing to compromise on the issue, the Associated Press reports. The presumed presidential candidate had previously announced his opposition to offshore drilling but said Friday he would consider supporting limited offshore drilling if that was the way to get policy enacted that promotes more fuel-efficient cars and the development of alternate energy sources.

With attack ads criticizing Obama’s aversion to the drilling even as gasoline prices rise to $4, Obama has reneged his opposition, hoping that a compromise could put an end to policy gridlock on energy issues. “My interest is in making sure we've got the kind of comprehensive energy policy that can bring down gas prices,” Obama said in an interview with the Palm Beach Post. “If, in order to get that passed, we have to compromise in terms of a careful, well thought-out drilling strategy that was carefully circumscribed to avoid significant environmental damage -- I don't want to be so rigid that we can't get something done.”

Oil and energy have been a hot debate topic the past several weeks, leading up to the five week Congressional hiatus coming up. Earlier House Leader Nancy Pelosi refused to cave in to pressure to allow a vote on offshore drilling. It is unclear how Obama’s recent switch in stance will affect the Congresswoman’s steadfastness.

“The Republicans and the oil companies have been really beating the drums on drilling,” Obama said in the Post interview. “And so we don't want gridlock. We want to get something done.”

This is probably because their employer only pays for them, and usually they still have to pay almost 200.00 a month to be covered themselves.

Yes, if you are poor and intelligent, you can receive grants. there is a BIG difference between a GRANT and a Government student loan. If you have a government student loan and you are not making payments on it, they will and do garnish your wages for it,you cannot buy a home until the student loan is paid for(if you can't make the payments) on the loan, or if you default.

Really - how so? Examples, please, and more substantive than welfare queens driving cadillacs, I hope.

I'll give some examples of proven value of social welfare: I, personally, have benefited from the public dole by federal college grants and loans and I think I've paid back more than my share in money and kind. The GI Bill worked very well after WWII, SS has kept my parents generation solidly middle class. Many social welfare programs have worked very well and contributed to the growth and prosper of the middle class in the US.

I'm not saying that, they shouldn't have to pay back their loans,my son's GF has been working 2 jobs to help her pay back her student loans. The people we sold our previous house to almost couldn't go to settlement because it said the husband had an outstanding student loan. He said that was impossible, he never went to college! They tracked the guy who stole his identy to get his student loan in Texas.

Of course the market is being manipulated. No question about it. Wait till you see how much it comes down in October. Inless we have a hurricane in the gulf, I'm sure it will be down to about 3.25 or less a gallon.
