McCain was not your average recruit. His father and grandfather were both four-star admirals in the Navy. I don't know any admirals but i suspect they had adequate compensation that afforded a very comfortable lifestyle.
The thing that I have a problem with is the way the Republican party has positioned itself as the champion of "family values", as if they were something specific to that party. To select a presidential candidate who doesn't meet minimum standards seems hypocritical to me.
And I do care what he was doing 30 years ago. Personality remains relatively stable over a healthy adult's lifetime. I do wonder why he graduated 6th from the bottom of a class of 899 at the naval academy. I do wonder why his words don't match from day to day. At the beginning of the primary season, I hoped that either of the candidates selected by the major parites would be fully qualified to be president. I don't think that Mr. McCain was a very good choice for his party.
I considered voting for him before I found out more about him. He was a bona fide war hero, an experienced senator, his views seemed reasonable (now I'm not sure what his views are), and there was the possibility that the race would be between him and Clinton, who would have been mired in the unfinished business from her husband's presidency from Day 1. I vote for the person, not the party. I also liked Ron Paul, most of whose views are not similar to mine. I certainly don't share h is religious orientation, but I would have seriously considered voting for him.

of course you can take his behavior into account from over 30 years ago ... I already said that was your right.
I take character into account too ... but only as part of my decision making.

Bea - I was going to make that same point.
Sandy - I agree with you regarding the impact McCain's POW experience could have had on his marriage. He

well even though it's a 2nd marriage I think a nearly 30 year marriage IS a good example of 'family' ... but that's just me.
'They' endured his being a POW. 'They' could not endure her being less pretty than his new wife.
