I pay $20 a visit for wellness check ups as my copay.

At least in Oklahoma, catastrophic coverage is available through private insurance companies as a separate policy.

A lot of these coverages are available, but a lot of people don't take advantage of them.

"Yes that is true - and that is why there are other programs out there for rent assistance through invidual local governments, cities, towns, etc. Even utility assistance."
Not every community has these programs - and even when they do, they are often limited.

Yes, they are limited - b/c the government shouldn't be responsible to pay for everyone's living arrangements. It's just not going to happen - yes, it sucks - it sucks for those individuals who are in tough situations that may be out of their hands...there isn't an answer for everyone or for every problem - and there never will be.

If they aren't offered in some communities, maybe individuals in those communities could start writing to their state senators to have those plans and programs implemented.

"Abraham Lincoln was a republican....in case you didn't know."

I guess you missed my earlier posts. He was also a liberal. And he was unfailingly polite to people who disagreed with him on political issues. Times sure have changed, haven't they?

Today's Republicans (that is, the party members) don't even look much like the Republicans of 30 years ago, when I used to vote Republican!

a lot of people don't take advantage of coverages because they are denied due to pre-existing conditions or past illnesses. again, you have to be fortunate enough to be healthy to qualify. so it's not as easy as some people make it seem.

And that is why these coverages are offered for people to take advantage of BEFORE something catastrophic happens.

"She has never missed a well baby visit or skipped going to the doctor because of a runny nose."

Do you really take your child to the doctor for a runny nose? Because it's people who run for every single sniff and shiver that run the costs up. ESPECIALLY when they run to urgent care or the ER. Imagine how many colds the ER sees every year, when these people should be eating chicken noodle soup and lying in bed. Adults who require a note to miss work--totally understand. But to fly to Dr. Ped with every runny noses, minor cough, barf, diarrhea, ache, pain, or even chicken pox--that's a problem for everyone, in that it runs up EVERYONE's costs. If running a normal course --even with a moderately high fever, most childhood illnesses don't require medical intervention at all. Even if something IS bacterial (viral, NOTHING can fix, it'll have to run its course), a young, healthy child's body will kick it without antibiotics. But it's the "race to the doctor" types that run up costs for all. Between nervous moms with kids who are fine and eager-to-treat docs who throw Amoxicillin at every sniffle, I bet it's a significant portion of the overblown costs of care.

And if I've missed that your child has a chronic health condition that endangers their life shoulb they become exposed to common, normally harmless illnesses and injuries (aids, leukemia, hemophilia, etc.), that's not what I'm talking about. But I see moms run to the doctor with splinters, hangnails, "threw up once," "had diarrhea for a day," sniffles for 3 days, etc. get medical "treatment," and it turns my stomach. Getting sent home from a doctor with orders to "rest, give fluids, use tylenol or motrin for fever," is a waste of healthcare and insurance resources.

And I'm just speaking as a mom of 6 who has never taken a sick child to a doctor except in the case of a 10 day old newborn--and they told me she did NOT have pneumonia, but gave me a prescription for antibiotics anyway. I threw the script out before I left the office. What the heck, am I stupid--that doc didn't even know if it was bacterial, it was 90% likely viral, and what if she's allergic to it? Then I have a MUCH more serious issue on my hands. If a fever is under 101 or 102, I leave it alone--it's going to help burn up the germ; if it's 102 or more, I give tylenol. It works every time. And I even let ear infections run their course. And well visits? I know they're well--they eat well, they gained weight consistently along the growth chart (which I got online), they are developmentally on target for their age, they show no signs of hearing or vision trouble (I got the eye chart, too)--why am I going to pay a $50 copay and have my insurance company pay $600 ($100 for each kid) to tell me what I already know--they're fine!

If your kids are healthy, be grateful and don't bug the doctors when they sniff or barf. Kids catch stuff, and moms have instincts. And if your instincts are that every sniffle could be deadly, every barf could be the beginning of the end--you're part of the healthcare problem.

If you read my posts you would see I'm uninsured, and I pay my ped $125/visit to have the priviledge of being told it's nothing and go home.

I have read McCain's policies and they are no different than Bush! Now tell me honestly can this country continue to afford the same policies of Bush for another 4 years? Just look what is happening all this week! We as a country are almost 10 trillion dollars in debt to foriegn countries! We belong to other countries and have no great influence because we are too much in debt to these countries! Just be smart you know McCain/Bush policies are what has gotten our country in the mess we're in now!
