" The test of a civilization is in the way that it cares for its helpless members" Pearl Buck. "My Several Worlds" 1954"

The point is not how it helps the nation. the point is what it says about our ability to care.

We do such a smashing job with our ederly and mentally disabled already, now don't we?

I agree - I've been in a low income situation, the "middle" where it was difficult to afford yet made too much for assistance, and at the point where I am now able to afford it.

And yet that point is completely moot b/c there are already programs in place that DO allow children to have insurance, well child visits, etc.

Because when your son doesn't have coverage and is treated anyway--the taxpayer pays as well as the folks who have opted for insurance coverage. They're the ones doing all the paying. Yourself as a taxpayer and as an insurance purchaser is already paying for those who don't/won't. Don't you think they should have some responsibility to contribute to their own care?

The only way to spread the cost around fairly is to design the system with mandates or pay for it through a VAT.

You are already helping to foot the bill for those who refuse to pay their own way.

The programs are in place already for low income families.

Just want to point out that not every uninsured person out there refuses to pay their own way.
