Palin - proponent of banning books

So what do you think?

Stein says that as mayor, Palin continued to inject religious beliefs into her policy at times. "She asked the library how she could go about banning books," he says, because some voters thought they had inappropriate language in them. "The librarian was aghast." That woman, Mary Ellen Baker, couldn't be reached for comment, but news reports from the time show that Palin had threatened to fire Baker for not giving "full support" to the mayor.

Here's the link to the original story that ran in 1996 in the Frontiersman, her local paper:

What I find interesting is that she went to the librarian multiple times regarding this issue, yet says that these questions were hypothetical.

Did i misunderstand the article? i read it as a "trial balloon" - asking the librarian "what would you do if ..." rather than saying "here is my list now do it or get out." Palin did not even indicate she herself wanted to ban books, so it is possible she was preparing for a protest from an outside group that might force her hand.

And it seems this article appeared before the librarian was fired - so was it clear that the two instances were related? yes it appears that way but was there some other issue in between?

i think there are bigger issues than firing the librarian.

Asking what library policy is once seems to be reasonable.

The "firing the librarian" issue, combined with "troopergate" though?

I was raised by a librarian and I find this disturbing.

I know, I never got that contradiction about the right either, they SAY they want less government, and yet they want that government to have a say in our most personal matters!!!!

"I was raised by a librarian and I find this disturbing. While the right touts "less government in our lives" it really seems to boil down to what they see fit for others' lives. More double standards. "

I certainly don't disagree with that thought.

But i hope the campaign avoids a focus on the issue of "asking questions" about book bans when the focus should be on ideological dismissals. But then some people don't have a problem with that and expect that of a change in administration.

Actually, the focus should be on whether campaign statements were really "overstatements" to give the impression of being a reformer when Palin is really the same old GOP. That's where swing voters are likely to have an issue and need to see we are talking about 4 more years of Bush politics.

(sorry, I'm approaching this as a marketing strategy)

What many people fail to realize is that when a person in a government position is fired, they

I'm more concered with an elected official (or any citizen) wanting to ban books but I imagine it is frustrating to not be able to comment on the firing of an employee.
