Actually, Obama has come out more than once in favor of stricter gun controls, such as Chicago has imposed, and prior to the recent Supreme Court ruling, spoke favorably on the DC model.

As far as taking away semiautomatic weapons, that darned old inconvenient second amendment's going to get in the way, based on the same recent Supreme Court case.

Obama's position http://www.ontheissues.org/Gun_Control.htm

  • Ok for states & cities to determine local gun laws. (Apr 2008)
  • FactCheck: Yes, Obama endorsed Illinois handgun ban. (Apr 2008)
  • Respect 2nd Amendment, but local gun bans ok. (Feb 2008)
  • Provide some common-sense enforcement on gun licensing. (Jan 2008)
  • 2000: cosponsored bill to limit purchases to 1 gun per month. (Oct 2007)
  • Concealed carry OK for retired police officers. (Aug 2007)
  • Stop unscrupulous gun dealers dumping guns in cities. (Jul 2007)
  • Keep guns out of inner cities--but also problem of morality. (Oct 2006)
  • Bush erred in failing to renew assault weapons ban. (Oct 2004)
  • Ban semi-automatics, and more possession restrictions. (Jul 1998)
  • Voted NO on prohibiting lawsuits against gun manufacturers. (Jul 2005)

  • McCain's views

  • I know how to use guns; but I don't own one. (Nov 2007)
  • Prosecute criminals, not citizens for gun ownership. (Sep 2007)
  • Don't hold gun manufacturers liable for crimes. (Sep 2007)
  • Opposes restrictions on assault weapons and ammunition types. (Sep 2007)
  • Calls for GOP "tolerance" of closing gun show loopholes. (May 2002)
  • Ban cheap guns; require safety locks; for gun show checks. (Aug 1999)
  • Supports ban on certain assault weapons. (Aug 1999)
  • Voted against Brady Bill & assault weapon ban. (Aug 1999)
  • Guns are a problem, but so are violent web sites & videos. (Aug 1999)
  • Punish criminals who abuse 2nd Amendment rights. (May 1999)
  • Youth Violence Prevention Act restricts guns for kids. (May 1999)
  • Repeal existing gun restrictions; penalize criminal use. (Jul 1998)
  • Voted YES on prohibiting lawsuits against gun manufacturers. (Jul 2005)
  • Voted YES on banning lawsuits against gun manufacturers for gun violence. (Mar 2004)
  • Voted NO on background checks at gun shows. (May 1999)
  • Voted YES on more penalties for gun & drug violations. (May 1999)
  • Voted YES on loosening license & background checks at gun shows. (May 1999)
  • Voted YES on maintaining current law: guns sold without trigger locks. (Jul 1998)
  • Ban gun registration & trigger lock law in Washington DC. (Mar 2007)
  • Allow firearms in National Parks. (Feb 2008)

  • So, bottom line, if you want more gun control, vote Obama.

hot-water, even before Canada implemented strict gun control laws, their incidence of violence was much lower than the US.

what I have read, (if one can believe anything these days) is there have been no conclusive studies showing the ratios of prey to preditors........I'm not interested in arguing, but rather in learning.......seeing even an ant stepped on bothers me somewhat, but I believe if an intruder was to threaten my family, I would have no problem shooting .........that video WAS horrid, and I wonder at the people who posted it, and where their common sense was........under no circumstances would I want a child viewing it........I've lived many years, and was all for Palin until I heard her interviews,,,,,,if she wins I do hope she is more gifted at running our country than speaking......

I guess I just don't understand why someone would WANT to own a semi-automatic weapon.

I dont like Palin for a large variety of reasons, but this doesnt even make the list.

Wildlife biologists often manage groups of animals by reducing their numbers. I dont know enough about the specific situation in Alaska re:moose/caribou, but if the reasons behind the desire to reduce wolf numbers are ecologically sound, I dont have a problem with it. The methods have that gut reaction of being cruel, but given how remote the area is, and how shy wolves often are, it's hard to see how the job could be done in another way without being prohibitively expensive. I dont agree with the idea of offering a bounty for wolf legs, the chance that too many wolves will be taken is too great, but that doesnt necessarily make the whole program bad.

In Australia, koala are overpopulated, and wildlife managers there have be culling their numbers for years. No one likes to think about fuzzy little koalas being killed, but there are sound reasons for it. Are all the government officials in australia "sick pieces of work" ?

I guess I'm a "sick piece of work" myself. I wonder if Obama still wants my vote? My first job out of grad school (I am a wildlife biologist) was on a endangered species program, and one of the goals was to reduce the numbers of an invasive bird species that is decimating songbird populations. Part of my job was to check the traps, and kill the birds. It was certainly not something I enjoyed (and I rarely told anyone about that part of my job), but it was a necessary part of the recovery program for the endangered birds.

(BTW after public outcry regarding the koala killing, funds were raised for a alternative sterilization project. Does the same job, but is hundreds of times more expensive. Maybe you could start a grassroots campaign to fund wolf sterilization if it bothers you that much...

A semi-automatic weapon simply means it shoots each time you pull the trigger.
