"As I said before, doctors and hospitals take payments for service, if people get jobs they can go to the doctor and make payments"

Not on $800,000.00 they don't.

Maybe the next time she has to go to the store she should leave her car at home and walk - after all the roads are built by the government. Next time there is a natural disaster near her she should just fend for herself - wouldn't want to use any government resources there either. Some one breaks into your house? Don't call the police - they are funded by the government. Heck your doctor may even have used federal funds to get through medical school so better start gathering your own natural plant medicines - wouldn't want to use a doctor and take advantage of his federally funded education.

Go ahead and pull your kids out of school and teach them at home, because again - federal funds go to almost every school in America. Some of the products in your local grocery store are more reasonably priced due to federal subsidies to farmers so you better investigate that before you shop or you might accidentally use government funds.

There is virtually no area of you life that government funds has not touched - so back to the stone age or accept it.

Many Americans want to eliminate the Department of Education because they see it as a redundancy.

Well that would work well for the wealthy states, but what about poor states the rely heavily on federal funding or poor districts that rely heavily on federal funding? Do children in those states/district deserve less education?

No, they deserve the funding without the interference of the federal government.

Here's the dilema - the feds tell states that they HAVE to do something, and then what?

So now you are an authority on where welfare recipients live? Are you a social worker? Have you even bothered to educate yourself or do you just spend all day spewing forth made up generalities that you can not support with facts? Oh and last I checked public transportation still costs money - hence my original statement 'lacking in reliable transportation' - it is only reliable for you if you can afford it!

Awaiting another senseless, unproven generality.

Oh trust me - I know - I teach in a poor district. NCLB was never fully funded and has really hampered the ability of some school districts to provide adequate funding - my school has been lucky in that every year so far we have made AYP, not bad for a poor middle school, but still our building is falling apart, our books are outdated, and the idea of technology is just a dream. The past year rising food and fuel costs have really taken their toll - so the idea of a state or district being solely responsible for funding is a bit scary!

Sadly there are too many states who can't do it without help from Uncle Sam, so it would be nice to get someone in the White House who recognized that - what we really need is a children's issue lobby - maybe then someone would be really pushing for funding for issues that affect our children like they do for oil!
