>>you can call mom and dad for a loan so you don't end up homeless, you really can't know what it's like to be poor.<<
That's a wonderful example of perpetuating the victim mindset.
It's also an insult to everyone who manages to not to become homeless without a cash cow parent base.
If you don't have family to fall back on that makes it all the more important for you to develop a strong network of friends and involve yourself in you church and/or community. Be a friend to others and they will be there for you in the event you need them.
And before you jump all over me and say "that's not what friends are for"....let me say hogwash. That's exactly what real friends to for each other--so by you putting forth the time and effort (yes, it takes time and effort to nurture friendships) you are benefiting others and that should be your reason for taking the time but in doing so you benefit yourself as well.
Not having rich parents to fall back on when you fail and using it as an excuse for your failure is nothing but a cop-out. And it's a dangerous mindset to have that only serves to harm you in the long run.
One of the things you find with happy and successful people is not that they don't experience grave hardships in their lives but it's found in their attitudes and ability to see opportunities and advantages when others bogged down by self-pity would not.

I contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like
a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle.
Winston Churchill
The government could promote a lot of good will by giving every tax payer a copy of the the "Cash Flow 101 Game".
It teaches that very concept. You are assigned a role and given a budget. It's a life altering teaching tool.
