It isn't a big deal. It's about as big of a deal as Lieberman endorsing McCain. Lieberman would be classified as a moderate Democrat. Powell is a moderate Republican. Neither one is considered to be mainstream by their respective parties. Neither one will draw what the candidates hoped for, which is mainstream support from each other's party, or from true Independent voters. That's the truth of the matter.
Powell is still not viewed very favorably by the antiwar crowd. So Powell's endorsement may even take away Obama support from hard core antiwar activists who still believe Powell is part of the "Bush lied and people died" crowd. There are a lot of whacked out, kook fringe extremists in the Democrat party Obama has to tread softly with, or they'll stay home instead of voting. Powell's endorsement may make a few of them stay home and smoke their medicinal pot instead of voting.
b) I also think that Colin Powell is above endorsing someone just to get a position in their administration. If he was that weazely then I'd wonder, again, where was the judgment and wisdom of the Republicans when placing him in extremely important positions in the past?
Are you clear about that? ;>
Apparently you're not clear. Offering someone a job for an endorsement IS paying them back for their endorsement. Where did I mention in my original post that Obama was paying Powell back with money for his endorsement? You read into my words what you wanted to hear, which is totally unfair of you.
so you think that only democrats smoke medicinal pot and are the kook fringe extremists? i have to say i respectfully disagree w/that statement. Mommy to Rowen and Weylin, my boys rule- ME>
Only if the Independents are antiwar will his endorsement mean anything. Most antiwar Independents have made up their minds already to support Obama in the first place, so Powell's endorsement is a moot point.
Note the poster differentiated between the two: "I totally agree - wonder what Obama offered him, or how much he paid him."
At any rate, if Powell can so easily be bought off - with *either a position *or just being "paid" outright - then what on earth were the Republicans doing trusting him with such important and powerful positions in their administration?! Good grief and yikes :)>
How much he paid him can mean anything. maybe Obama offered to pay him for his endorsement with goats? Maybe Obama offered to pay him for his endorsement with a job of his choice? You're splitting hairs, and attempting to bait me. Baiting is a TOS violation. I suggest you stop.

You might remember this post - it was to you, and is the one about which I've been commenting:

gotcha (as in now i understand your point).
~and smoke their medicinal pot instead of voting~
As an aside, my daughter has medicinal pot (in the form of Sativex spray, derived directly from pot rather than being synthetic).
Personally, more than Powell's support of Obama, it's his observations re: McCain and Palin that may influence the undecided.

You could be right, though. Obama's numbers rising may have nothing to do with Powell at all. Hard to say :)>
His "observations" sounded strained, and not like they came from the heart.
