I saw a poster's blinkie that said something about how you "can't be both pro-life and pro-war".

I'm not sure, but I gather some find the difference is between innocence and necessary, ie. that the z/e/f is innocent and should therefore always/usually be protected, while they view war as necessary.

i've always been confused by how people who claim to be pro-life are also willing to go to war. unfortunately some wars are inevitable, but the one in iraq certainly wasnt.

it is weird to me that "pro-life" is typically a republican talking point when so many other issues that i would categorize as "pro-life" are not supported by many republicans, such as stem cell research, social proagrams, acessable healthcare...

i'm not saying that republicans are evil, or are 'anti-life,' i just feel like "pro-life" is much to broad of a term to only apply to abortion.

Its true. You can't be pro-life and pro-war. It is totally hypocritical.

Oooo, I got in hot water in my IV playgroup over this.

I will say that I think it is a bit disingenuous to use the term "pro-life" but limit it to the abortion debate. As well as war, what about the death penalty? What about AIDS relief? What about "death with dignity" initiatives?

It seems like the term "pro-life" would extend to a broader philosophy on the inherent value of every life, not just the unborn.

I have never quite gotten the whole prolife thing either. They hate abortion. But will support war. Fight to the bitter end to keep people alive, like Terry Shiavo, on life support. Meanwhile support the Death Penalty.

I have said before what is it trully. Abortion, Death with Dignity are all issues that are private and usually between human beings and their families and Doctors, those decisions are theirs and their alone. Making decisions within their own fanilies for themselves.

War and the Death Penalty are not private choices. Well I guess serving in war is a personal choice and you are willing to accept the consequesnes of those actions. But the Death Penalty is a decicion made for you by someone else. Yes a crime was committed by that person who should pay for the consequenses but by us sending him to death? Does that change any thing?

I guess Life and Death is not so simple is it?

This is why I have to consider myself pro-choice even tho I am smack in the middle of the abortion debate. I believe abortion is wrong (except in rape/incest/life of mother). BUT that's my own personal belief.. I can't force my personal opinion on others. If I say I'm pro-life, I am considered anti-choice which isn't true. If I say I'm pro-choice I'm looked at as pro-abortion which isn't true.

As for the death penalty, I believe the death penalty SHOULD be allowed for only the absolute worst offenders.. IE mass murderers/serial killers. But only those offenders.

Far as war goes.. it is often a necessary evil but is overused way too much in the history of the world. That's b/c we are humans. I think the killing of near 5k troops so far and hundreds of thousands of innocents and tens of thousands of insurgents/militia has gone beyond necessity and into slaughter. Yes war is sometimes necessary to keep the innocents of the world safe (IE WWI & WWII) but it's not something we should be taking as lightly as we have (Bush 2). I'm torn on Iraq personally.. but that's just me.
