I thought this article did a great job explaining the problems that will go along with McCain's healthcare plan.

I'm not fond of either plan but since you favor Obama's can I ask you what he means by mandatory coverage of children by parents?

He wants to mandate SIGNING UP all children for health insurance coverage. Which I don't think is a bad thing. He also wants to EXPAND medicaid & SCHIPs so no kids get left out if $$ is an issue. As it stands we cannot afford Healthy Families in NY but we make too much to qualify for Medicaid. Under Obama's plan the income limit for Medicaid would increase to a much higher level and Healthy Families price would lessen significantly.

Here's a link that explains the pros & cons of his plan (yes I know there is a downside to his as well): http://www.thehealthcareblog.com/the_health_care_blog/2008/10/obamas-health-p.html

And Urban Institute (nonpartisan) has a summary of both plans: http://www.urban.org/

I totally understand your concern.. I have very similar concerns to be honest.. I just already know for a fact that McCain's plan will make it even less likely we'll be able to get HC so Obama's is the one I'm going with far as supporting. I do admit both are far from perfect. I like how Germany's HC is... everyone who works pays the same % based on income and they all get great access to Dr visits.

Hi Sandy, I wanted to try to answer the question you had regarding mandated health insurance for children under Obama's plan. Here's a similar Q & A directly from his website -

Q. How will the mandate that children be covered affect me?

A. When children are born, their parents will be assisted in signing them up for

affordable, high quality coverage, either through their own employer-sponsored insurance

plans, through Medicaid or SCHIP, or through options established by the Obama plan.

We will continue to make sure that children are covered, which may include verification

when parents sign them up for daycare or school. Obama’s plan will help parents make

sure their children get the care they need, at the time they need it.

Here's the link to the Q & A page from his site - http://www.barackobama.com/pdf/Obama08_HealthcareFAQ.pdf

existing children?

and the % that still won't be covered under his plan, will some of them be kids?

and what happens if they do the verification for daycare/school and a parent doesn't have coverage and doesn't qualify for state?
