This has got to be one of the most horrid teachers I've ever seen. This clip is from a documentary that was aired in Sweden last night. I feel so sorry for that poor little girl. I hope her mom sees this and that this teacher is fired.

I don't know you or your DH to know why he would be in Iraq for 11 years straight. Yes, we could very well have a military presence in Iraq for a very long time, but I don't think anyone intends to be in a combat situation there for 100 years.

I'm an Obama supporter but I am totally about everyone voting for who they believe in. I do think the teacher went too far when talking about that little girls dad. That was unneccesary and you could see it upset her. The teachers job is to educate and lift students up, not to bring them down. I also think she should have kept her "oh lord" and "jesus!" to herself when kids said "McCain". She kept saying, it's okay if you say McCain, but when they did she acted like it was the worst thing in the world.

I guess technically the teacher was correct, but it all depends on how the teacher said it. It is one thing to state a fact, it is another story if he used that to belittle her or her ancestry. The Mennonites are a great example of what our country is all about. Religious freedom at it's purest.

I didn't say straight. They deploy for 15 months and are home for 12. Where are they spending most of their time? Yes, that's right, their primary "home" is Iraq.

I certainly don't mean to be offensive, but to suggest that the girl might not be with her dad for 100 years is absurd. >>

Really not absurd when there is a high possibility of the girls father not coming back from deployment alive.

Although I do believe that the teacher took things too far, to be fair she did not suggest that the girl would not see her father for a hundred years but rather that her father would be "in the military for the next hundred years". And although that was an obvious exaggeration (whether or not the girl understood the exaggeration), the point she was tryig to make wasn't that far fetched. Given the fact that the use of stop-loss has been enacted, her father could very well be stuck in the military beyond his contracted end of service date. But like I said, I do not agree with how the teacher conducted herself and as an aside, I think there would be some people who would be more upset with her saying "oh lord" and "jesus" in the classroom then with her comments regarding the war.

The teacher singled a child out because of her family's political position and made her feel bad about it. She wasn't helping the students to build their verbal skills or giving them the tools to support or reflect upon their positions. As the teacher, she's the one with the power. If I knew that sort of thing was going on in my child's classroom, I'd be advocating for my child until a solution was found. The teaching profession is no place for bullies.

While I don't believe this teacher should have displayed her political views and ridiculed the child for her parents views what-so-ever. I seriously doubt if this is a reason to homeschool your children. The only reason I could see to not want my child in a school environment is for some reason they stopped hiring college educated teaching professionals and started hiring barely educated parents or something to that nature.

Very well stated. That teacher should be fired or made to apologize in front of her classroom and their parents. She was way out of line to attempt to humiliate a child that way when children so often feel intimidated enough about asking and answering questions in class.

It's clear corinne's suggested method is much more appropriate. So long as all the information is presented and offered for analysis. Some people actually still believe in supporting a cause greater than themselves. Because one may not agree or be able to relate is no reason to denigrate those who do.
