Repeat abortions among teens rise

LONDON (UPI) -- The number of abortions performed in Britain on teenage girls who have had at least one before has risen by nearly 70 percent since 1991, researchers say.

A study, published in the journal Contraception, found that the proportion of repeat pregnancy terminations carried out on teenagers rose by 68 percent in 16 years, the Daily Mail reported Saturday.

In 2007, 5,897 girls under 20 had their second, third or even fourth abortion. By comparison, the figure in 1991 stood at 2,934, the newspaper reported.

Experts have attributed the situation to an increase in binge drinking among youths.

Norman Wells of Family and Youth Concern blamed the increase in repeat abortions on the "contraceptive culture" in Britain.

"High abortion rates and the alarming number of repeat teenage abortions are the inevitable fruit of a society that has made an idol of sexual pleasure and failed to respect its proper place and purpose," he was quoted as saying.

My understanding is that the teen pregnancy rates recently rose in the US also.

I don't know what it is like in the UK, but

It seems to me that repeat PREGNANCIES not repeat abortions is the real problem here. If the unwanted pregnancies did not occur, then abortions would be a non-issue. I think as a society we need to take a long, hard look at what we do to educate our children!

That may be true.....but after the first abortion you are given contraceptive counseling.

I dunno...it's always been my impression (although I don't have first hand knowledge) that abortion is not "easy". It's costly, it takes time to make the arrangements and undergo the procedure, the aftermath can include pain, cramping, and bleeding. The side effects can include fever, infection, sterility, and (in rare cases), death.

I seriously doubt that women are having repeat abortions because they're "easy".

True, but I wonder how effective such counseling is at that point.

I belive that it is done during their post procedure check up.

I don't think counseling is enough. The counseling needs to be followed up with continued easy, non-judgmental availability of contraception. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a teenager who doesn't know that unprotected sex can lead to pregnancy, the key is providing them with ongoing access to ways to prevent pregnancy in the future.

Well, that may be part of the problem- many teens won't go back for said check-up, especially if they had to travel to a far-off city to get the abortion in the first place, as many teens in rural part of the nation have to do.
