I never said I disliked the idea overall, but $40 for one single hour of community service (which is what it works out to $4000 for 100 hours) seems excessive.
I've read a few posts were people have mentioned that a $4000 credit seems like a lot for 100 hours of community service. I just wanted to point out that the credit is not actually in exchange for community service. The point of the credit is to make college more affordable for all but in order to qualify for the credit you have to contribute your time by serving your community. Here's a link to Obama's National Service plan. http://www.barackobama.com/pdf/NationalServicePlanFactSheet.pdf
Btw, I really like that he has a plan such as this. I think it says a lot about how much he really wants to strengthen and make our country better. I've looked and found no similar plan from McCain which saddens me. I think McCain missed a wonderful opportunity to promote community service especially since "service" seemed to be such an important theme of his campaign. He does list different organizations you could donate your time or money to but as far as I know he hasn't addressed national service in an actual plan.

Its similar to work study, right? It allows companies to pay full time students min wage, and the gov makes up the diff, so the wage is good.
40 is a lot. But the concept is excellent. I'd love to see it extended to be civil service that's non-military.

AmeriCorps in a nutshell.
The cost of college has risen beyond the ability of many in the middle class to afford.
It's okay, my DD will be two next month and I'm pregnant with twins.
That is not true.
