I think the point here is that poor people or people who are struggling to pull themselves up by their bootstraps aren't trying to live like Paris Hilton - nor is the government interested in subsidizing them to live like Paris Hilton.
The point is that when you don't start out in life with the same advantages, then you must work harder for the same thing.
Example: Person A grows up with preschool, dance classes, baseball games and parents who would do anything for her, including tutoring, the best schools, and frequent access to health care. Person B grows up with no preschool because head start was cut and preschool is privatized, no dance class or baseball or any other extracurricular activites because they have a single parent who must work just to pay the bills and cannot afford those activities nor find someone to drive the child to them. Person B's schools are crumbling, the education is sub-standard and the students are shuttled through with little to no encouragement for college.
Outcome: If we're lucky, Person B is of the mentality and ambition to forge a path for herself. However, what happens more often than not is Person B repeats that cycle.
What most liberals propose is that our country will be strengthened by providing equal access to opportunities such as education and healthcare. I've yet to see anyone propose that we hand out a million dollars to everyone and ensure everyone has a mansion on a hill.
To suggest that social progressives want to turn the working poor into Paris Hilton socialites is ridiculous. What we want is a stronger country where children are raised to succeed at the global level. I've yet to see a social conservative prove that slashing social programs will make that happen.
>>ok.....there's one quote...at a press conference...and twisted in with a lot of contradicting statements...that was the point of the video...i am not interested in tag lines, and sound bytes...is there anything linking bush and JM in a more concrete, realistic fassion? like thier voting record? or thier stance on certain topics?<<
I am not asking for any of the luxuries you described. I just want to be able to live comfortably without constantly struggling for money. I'm not whining b/c I don't have the money for a mansion or a sports car, I don't even have a car! Do you really think the distribution of income in this country is fair? Who would teach your children, or serve your food, or defend your freedoms if everyone was just in it for the money and the luxuries?
yes yes....i see that point....very much......HOWEVER...the people who are struggling to feed thier family.....are not paying income tax....in most cases, they actually are recieving money at tax time.
I don't mean to offend here but you must lead a rather sheltered life. I most certainly pay income tax but we are "the people who are struggling to feed their family". That's a big part of what this election is about - the "middle class" who are barely getting by. How do you explain the ever widening gap between the upper and the lower class and why does the middle class seem to be disappearing?

Please note CMod Amy's post - sarcasm does not belong on a debate board.

I think you hit the nail on the head!
