Do a random google search on 'Should you pay off your mortgage'.
>>Ah but it's having monies in places that may offer a higher rate of return that has wiped out many people's "savings" now, is it not?<<
Only very foolish people would have ever done that. Anyone with any sense knows you "invest" only what you can afford to take a risk with.
And you did not consider the TVM. If you understand that concept then you understand why paying off a mortgage prematurely may very well not be a smart thing to do and why it's what a bank would want you to do.
So I would guess I'm not so alien after all.
It's funny. At the closing on the house I bought last week one of the realtors thanked us for helping to clean up the mess created by the sellers like the one we had just helped let off the hook.
Where would the country be without those who waited on the sidelines for opportunities and who aren't experiencing a credit crunch....the ones who will still be paying the bulk of the taxes and who saved some of their cash for those emergencies and opportunities?
(Do you believe in capitalist risk takers or not?)

There may be a few people who have the sense to ignore their broker, the 401K specialist, their realtor, their appraiser, their home/building inspector, the Fed, and the President, but many people actually trust the advice of people who are "experts" in their field.

And, my point is whenever we personally take a risk we can very well have-
1: possibility of loss or injury : peril
No one can predict the market including people who have created their jobs around the market (people on Wall Street).
We do follow the 15% 401k advice, however you are also given many options on how and where to invest that money.
