"I think it's just a little strange to expect "civilized discourse" when individuals don't respond in a civil manner."

With regard to the Constitution, it's a big subject and I'm not qualified (and I doubt few on the board are) to state specifically if something is Constitutional, so it's not something I usually comment on. In my hometown, a a large stone engraved with the Ten Commandments was removed from a city owned park where it had been donated years before, and my dad decided he had a dog in that fight and fought to have the stone replaced...it was removed by a city employee again, and Dad arranged to have it put back again, this time for good (for now at least). He actually didn't care so much about the stone, as his perception that the city was overstepping its limits in having the stone removed. I don't know if anyone in the controversy really knows what is really "constitutional" here...I have a book which discusses some cases that involve questions of constitutionality...and constitutional scholars disagree on a very similar situation...the stone would stay or go depending on whomever was asked.

With regard to civility in discourse, I think it's essential, and I decline hereafter to engage in arguments where verbal mud is being slung, whether I agree or disagree with the political viewpoint of the poster.

I'd have to disagree with all of that. He's not hateful, does not espouse hate, and would be a great President, leaps and bounds ahead of what we have now. Is he perfect? Of course not.

Agreed. At least with Romney, you can disagree with him over issues. Santorum...it's a totally different thing.
