I say "no," because a nuclear power plant isn't that much of a threat, and because (if I remember correctly), Iran has agreed to return the spent nuclear fuel to Russia.

Yes, I am aware of Joseph's role in sticking it in the state of the union speech. Although neither Joseph nor Bolton was the one to produce the fake documents. It was quite the story.

Bolton did however help back the story.

Bolton may have helped spread the yellowcake nonsense, but he didn't start it. That honor goes to Bob Joseph, who was on the NSC staff at the time, but later followed Bolton as the Undersecretary of State for International Security and Nonproliferation (I know it sounds like a different job, but Bolton/Joseph had changed the names of lots of offices in State, basically purging the phrase "arms control" from the titles). Bob Joseph just slightly edges out Bolton on my list of people who really make my blood boil. On some days, I'd put Joseph at the top of the list; on other days he's number 2 or 3.

In reality, the US will not have a choice. At least that is what people like Bolton are counting on. There is also a huge battle playing out right now over US support of Turkey, given the breakdown of the Israeli-Turkish military alliance. I suspect this blathering by Bolton is part of putting more pressure on the administration to put the screws on Turkey to back away from the Turkish cooperation with Iran.

Some of the very hardcore "israel-firsters" in DC are quite bent on pushing Israel to be more aggressive. They are also close to Bibi Netanyahu. If you remember, in the 90s they were trying to get him to attack Iraq.

Bolton also helped spread the yellowcake nonsense back in the day. He is a total neo-con stooge.

Bolton reminds me of Slim Pickens in the Dr. Strangelove movie - wish I was good at photoshop.

I'm hoping the Israelis don't hold Bolton in any level of esteem. Imagine if they looked to him for advice over such things. I gather from your post that you don't like Bolton. You were subtle, but I picked up on your sentiment.

I have many personal and professional reasons to absolutely despise John Bolton. I won't get into it, but the man is very close to number one on my enemies list (i.e., the people who have seriously complicated my ability to do my job effectively.) Anyway, with that caveat, let me say that this is the most IGNORANT, STUPID, IRRELEVANT and INFANTILE thing the man has ever said. He knows that Bushehr has nothing to do with Iran's nuclear program. It is a power reactor, built and fueled by Russia. Iran is not producing the fuel itself, so it learns nothing about centrifuge technology with this reactor. It is not keeping the fuel, but will send it back to Russia, when it is spent fuel, so Iran will neither store nor reprocess it. And John Bolton knows all of this because, when he was Undersecretary of State for Arms Control and Nonproliferation, the Bush Admin made it absolutely, unequivically clear that the U.S. did not care about Bushehr as long as Russia did not sell reprocessing technology to Iran (it did not) and as long as Russia planned to take back the spent fuel (it does).

So, when Bolton was making U.S. policy he had NO PROBLEM with Bushehr. There's no reason to have a problem with it now, except to be an unequivical idiot.

Sorry, but I just don't like the guy....
