And that was 20-some years ago, right? Do you realize that minimum wage hasn't even come close to keeping up with the inflation rate? It actually used to be plausible to live on minimum wage. That is no longer feasible.
A minimum wage increase is needed to restore the minimum wage to historic levels. The inflation-adjusted value of the minimum wage is 19% lower as of July 24, 2008 than it was in 1979.

19% less than the wages in 1979 -- that's absurd! And you know prices of everything, from gas to food to cars to homes, are nowhere near the prices they were in 1979.
