For my really decent sized, 2 bedroom apartment, we pay $620 a month. But we also live in the middle of Kansas. If you don't have a lot of money, it's definitely better financially to live in the middle of the country. Of course, Kansas has a minimum wage of $2.65, which is worthless. So that means that if you worked a minimum wage job in Kansas, you would get paid $5.85/hour, the federal rate. At that wage, you would make $936/month before taxes. My rent, electric/water/trash bills, and food costs would easily be $850/month. That doesn't include a car payment, car insurance, health insurance, day care costs, let alone any sort of savings to put towards a house or college.
It is just not possible to live on minimum wage.
