I think it's unfair to judge Sally because she has a cell phone. I know from first hand experience that lots of battered women's shelters give out cell phones to the women that frequent them, in case of emergencies. I've donated all of my old cell phones, as have my whole family, to these shelters so that these women would have a way of calling the police if their abuser is able to find them or threaten them.

It's one thing to hear the story of the woman who was powering her laptop instead of the fridge. It's quite another to see Sally paying with food stamps and see a phone in her purse and assume she is spending money on luxuries instead of on her needs. You just don't know how or why she got that phone and for you to presume that you do is really unfair.

Yes people fall on hard times, but I know there are programs out there to help them through the rough times.

I haven't read ahead (this thread is ssoooooo long), so someone may have already said this. Sorry, if that is the case.

You repeatedly bash all social & welfare programs, then you come out and say, "People can help themselves by using these programs!" It doesn't make any sense. Either you are for welfare and social services, or you are against them. They are ALL paid for by our tax dollars, so I don't understand what the problem is. You say people shouldn't have to use welfare because there are programs (like welfare) to help them out. ???? I am just really confused by your reasoning!

yes...i see your point...but it sounds like you just want that waste left as is?

I am also not proposing that these wasters are kicked off of aide, but maybe they were urged to make better decisions, if they don't know how, they could learn (educational materials, classes, counceling, advice)...i know this exists now, but maybe there should be more of an incentive for wise money management, maybe thier benefits should depend on prudent useage of those funds...

Where in this grand country rent for $700?

Well, this country consists of more than just NY. LOL. I am in the Midwest and you can rent an entire house, 2 or 3 beds, one bath, yard and the whole shebang for $700. It just depends where you live.

i agree...

but you probably didn't see my post yet, where i explained that sally was someone i knew quite well...

the cell phone was NOT a need...

and people (battered women) who have cell phones for emergencies don't chat on them, from ehat i know, they can only dial 911...they are not for casual conversations.

i think it depends really, i'd much rather sell my entire entertainment system than go without the internet for avariety of reasons... if i needed to lookf for a job, if i had kids who needed the internet for research, and it is pretty much the only news source i have. libraries are nice, but they are not always realistic... if you dont live close to own, if you dont have an id stating your address, a lot of time there is a limit to how long you can use them, often times their hours are not ideal... so i would say if you are using only to watch youtube videos it is a waste, but it can also be a very useful investment.

but who decides what is a last resort? it's all pretty subjective.

<>

and i agree... but unfortunately people dont always think that way, maybe because they never learned the value of foresight, or maybe the future just seems so gloomy that they psychologically cant handle thinking ahead...way to go, you triggered my never ending list of questions regarding welfare running through my brain. LoL
