It hasn't been a week yet since Obama became the President-elect, but I'm already hearing, and seeing

The same thing happened to me... Less than a month ago I was called "unpatriotic" bc I don't agree with the way Bush handled the war, the CIA thing, toture, deregulation,

That would depend on what your definition is of "stand-by". Will I ridicule him and make disparaging and hateful remarks about him to our enemies? Never. Would I be able to wish him well or show support to him for being a loving husband for multiple decades? Since I value marriage and those lasting as long as the Bush's are commendable no matter what your political bent--you betcha.

I view much of the behavior I've seen from my "fellow citizens" as rather treason-like. There are just some things that should not be done. Like bad mouthing your mother to strangers.

Then again perhaps that sense of loyalty comes from the fact that I have personally sworn to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign or domestic, and promised to bear true faith and allegiance to the same. Since the President is the Commander In Chief...it goes without saying. Then again, most veterans are patriots.

"General Washington" or "President Washington." Sometimes, it's just easier. Do you always refer to Gore as "Vice President Gore"? "

I agree with all that you said, but in a way :)

I love that you put "fellow citizens" in quotes. Simply because you don't agree with someone's behavior does not negate the fact that they are citizens and nor does it make their behavior "treason-like."

There are just some things that should not be done. Like bad mouthing your mother to strangers.

What if your mother is an abusive woman who tortured you her whole life? Simply because someone holds a specific position does not make them deserving of respect. That has to be earned, or rather, lost. I will respect anyone, until they give me reason not to. Bush has given me plenty of reasons not to respect him.

Then again, most veterans are patriots.

So then would you say a veteran who does say "hateful" remarks about Bush is not a patriot?

I would agree with that, but I don't think saying "Mr. Bush" is necessarily meant to be disrespectful. It might just be a habit that needs to be broken, kwim?

It is possible to respect Bush as our President while at the same time not agreeing with his policies. I respect the office of the President and b/c Bush holds that office, I respect him. However, I can still believe that he has done a poor job and I am free to share those feelings and opinions. It's kind of like how I feel about my children or my husband - I love them, but I don't always love their behavior or their actions. There's nothing "treasonous" about that.

Btw, isn't a senator deserving of respect? I would certainly say so but many others must obviously not agree based on the various things I heard and read during this election.

Also, what do you consider to be disparaging or hateful remarks? Is simply disagreeing with the President or speaking out about his decisions "treason"?

And as far as your comment regarding veterans - My DH signed on and served in Iraq during Bush's second term. He did not vote for Bush
