Stem Cell Research? Where do you stand?

Do you favor it because of all the potential good that can come from it?

Are you against it because of the use of human embryos?

Would you favor in the cases where embryonic stem cells are not used?

Let's talk some issues.

I disagree with you, but I'm pretty sure

I personally am in favor of embryonic stem cell research.

Hi Arizona,

On a side note, because Bush has not allowed for this research, America has fallen behind.

" I've read that adult stem cell has proved to be more successful, than embryonic stem cell research."
That's probably largely because there are a lot of legal and funding issues with even using embryonic stem cells. (There's also technical issues, but there are tech issues with adult stem cells as well.)

"Have you ever considered..."
I have considered some of them certainly would be Einsteins and some of them Hitlers were they to come to term. But it's all potential. The permutations of potential gametes pairings, there is even more potential - but that's what it is potential.

I wouldn't use my embies because, in my opinion, they are my babies. If someone was going to throw theirs away then I can see were using them could save/help people. Ours have been frozen for almost four years (on 11.29.08 it will be 4 years) because we haven't felt ready to use them. They are very much my babies though.

'Isn't that what we all are in the beginning, you and me, with the only difference being we are getting the chance to live out our potential to it's fruition. '
Every possible gamete pairing has potential. If two gametes do not pair, then that is a potential loss or gain for society. At one point each of us is two separate gametes. The two gametes come together to form a single cell. The cell has no thoughts, no pain, no consciousness. It is alive and it is human. It is not a human being, but it is a potential human being. The cell replicates and the cells begin to differentiate. A fetus forms. Eventually it will develop a rudimentary consciousness; it will be able to survive on its own (i.e. it will 'become viable). The birth of any child implies the lack of birth of billions of other potential people.

Now this is a potential human being, but the woman is an actual human being.
We are trying to control a woman's life (make choices for controlling her actual body) based on the potential for life - and the answer given (not by you but by many) is the intellectual and moral equivalent of "If you play, you pay."

For my part, I would like to see abortion as safe, legal, free, and in some cases strongly encouraged. That includes the mislabeled "partial birth abortions." This should be a decision the woman makes herself. If she wants to talk it over with a doctor, a family member, or some other trusted and sage adviser, that's great - but it should be her decision whom she talks with and what her final choice is.

I have no idea what will come of stem cell research, but there is potential there - for us to learn, to understand how diseases progress, how our own bodies function, and just maybe a cure or a relief for actual human beings with debilitating conditions and illnesses. My preference is always for actual human beings over potential human beings.

Question for any of you, can scientists use umbilical cord blood for anything?

I could counter your agrument, that an unborn baby is neither conscious or feels no pain, but that would only draw out this discussion, with no change in either of our positions.

What I find interesting is that many of the same people who were against killing the wolves think that abortion is ok??
