Stem Cell Research? Where do you stand?

Do you favor it because of all the potential good that can come from it?

Are you against it because of the use of human embryos?

Would you favor in the cases where embryonic stem cells are not used?

Let's talk some issues.

I disagree with you, but I'm pretty sure

What I find interesting is that many of the same people who were against killing the wolves think that abortion is ok??

"It's sad at where our priorities have gone where animals mean more than babies. "
From our perspective, foetuses are not human beings. They are not babies, but potential babies. The wolves are fully developed, conscious, but probably not self-aware to the extent of humans. The wolves are clearly more sentient than human foeti. Furthermore, the abortion of the human foetus is relatively quick. We do not chase them down until they are exhausted, shoot them, and leave them to die a suffering death in the wild.

I don't have a strong opinion on the wolf thing - just don't know enough about it right now. But at a quick brush, it's not exactly comparable. I understand that many anti-abortionists believe in magic. They believe there's this magical thing called a soul that a magical entity they call "God" imparts to the foetus at the moment of conception. They don't call it magic and may not care for this characterization. I'm not trying to be ungenerous, but that's what it is. I wouldn't dream of telling people what they can and can't believe. It would be rude and moreover futile. But their magical beliefs often incline them to acts of coercion. "You don't have to believe in my God, but you have to pretend like you do."

>>I could counter your agrument, that an unborn baby is neither conscious or feels no pain, <<

You certainly could make the argument that at some point a fetus feels pain, but you couldn't "counter" his argument as that isn't a point he made.

1) "Obama wants to take my guns"

If you are a criminal or mentally deranged, yes. Here's what Obama really says:

Q: But do you still favor the registration & licensing of guns?
A: I think we can provide common-sense approaches to the issue of illegal guns that are ending up on the streets. We can make sure that criminals don't have guns in their hands. We can make certain that those who are mentally deranged are not getting a hold of handguns. We can trace guns that have been used in crimes to unscrupulous gun dealers that may be selling to straw purchasers and dumping them on the streets.

2) Obama wants to raise taxes to support universal health care:

In fact, Obama and McCain have similar tax plans, at least with regard to most Americans. That is, they're going to borrow money. It's just what they're going to borrow the money for that differs.

I am a fan of taxes. The good things that taxes bring are what sets us apart from undeveloped countries without adequate food, shelter, transportation, energy, etc. for their citizens. In a country as (supposedly) rich as ours, we should not have to go to bed at night knowing that there is even one person who does not have adequate health care.

Anyone who has any sort of government job, or state job with health insurance has "socialized health care". What's available to the children of government officials ought to be good for my children as well. It is being paid for by taxes. Anyone who has a private health care with insurance has is a beneficiary of "socialized medicine". We pay more for goods because of employer subsidized health plans; a while back I saw that the prices of some American made cars (I think it was GM, but don't quote me on it) were 1/3 higher because of employee health benefits. This is not a bad thing. Health care is (in 21st century America) a necessity, not a luxury.

It is beyond the scope of this post to discuss what happens when we try to run government "like a business", but we can see the effects around us every day. So far the American people have bailed out Bear Stearns, Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac. Other financial institutions will "require" a taxpayer bailout in the near future. The federal government has borrowed money to issue "incentive" checks. The present administration has NOT practiced fiscal responsibility. It is hard to imagine how anyone could do worse.

This is Obama's actual proposal:

http://www.barackobama.com/issues/healthcare/

The present administration spent way, way more money than they took in. We all know what they spent it on, which brings us to:

3) Obama wants us to pay $12.00/gal

Where does this stuff come from? The statement is not true, but it might be better if it were, because the U.S. is going to be in deep trouble if we continue to rely on non-renewable resources for most of our energy needs. Alaska has enough oil to supply the U.S. for a few months at most. According to my geologist husband, not a drop of Alaskan Oil makes it to the lower 48. It's more cost-effective to send it to Japan. We would not be able to drill ourselves into energy independence even if we tapped every known domestic oil field. Our government subsidizes the price of oil very heavily. It takes a lot of military support to get oil from the various world hotspots to our country so that some of us can commute two hours to work every day. The recent increase in gas prices has more to do with speculation in the energy market than with actual shortages as this point. However, T. Boone Pickens, the Texas oilman, has invested very heavily in wind power. He's not stupid; neither should we be.

FYI- Obama is going to tax people who make more than $250,000 a year (congratulations if that's you), he plans to try to take away AK47s, not hunting rifles or guns, and he is planning to create new jobs by
