With all this talk about the mosque/community center and how those who don't support it don't have an issue with Islam but rather, the proximity to ground zero, it got me thinking...how supportive are we of Islam? Would you be okay with a mosque in your neighborhood? Would you be bothered if your child's teacher was Muslim? This is particularly interesting to me because my youngest son's teacher is in fact Muslim.

We have a mosque about 4 1/2 - 5 miles from here. Our local pizza parlor is owned by a Muslim. My sons each had at least one if not more Muslim teachers. My children's pediatrician is/was (my children are grown) a Muslim. There are many Muslim physicians in the U of Maryland health system (hospital 2 miles from my home) as well as in the Johns Hopkins health system throughout Maryland. My older son's high school tech buddy is a Muslim. My son was in a barracks at Twentynine Palms, California with a Muslim. Obviously, I have no problem with Muslims.

It wouldn't bother me a bit.

I would have absolutely no problem with it.

Yeah, well, this gets filed with all the other statements that people use to try to justify that what they believe isn't as ugly as it actually is.

We have a mosque about 3 miles away that was just built, no problem with it at all.

How would you feel about it if the situations were reversed? Would you put your child in a daycare with a Muslim teacher?

Btw, I'm not trying to "trap" anyone with these questions. Like I said, my son's teacher is Muslim - actually, two out of his three teachers are Muslim. One wears a hijab (dress and head covering) while the other does not. I also work in the school and I often give tours to prospective parents and while I have absolutely no problem with the teachers, I wonder if others possibly do. I should also mention, both women do pray in the school, although not in front of the children. They also often read the Quran in the classroom while the children are sleeping. And right now of course, both women are observing Ramadan so they're not eating or drinking anything during the day. Would any of these things bother you as a parent, or even as a fellow employee?

If it was a public school teacher I would have no issue, as they would not be allowed to teach religion.

That would not bother me at all. I would, however, not send my kid to a program with explicit Islamic teaching, which is a closer to analogy to the situation Nivri described.

I think it will be interesting how the holidays play out for the new little girl.
