Yup, and sometimes you can't deny that it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, and acts like a duck even if it tries really hard to convince people it is a swan.
Be aware, there are people out their paid to blogg smear on sites, to continue to smear Sen.Obama. They are paid to keep bringing up old lies over and over, because there is some poor, uneducated soul out there who will believe this. And by believing it, they will not vote for Sen. Obama. I have high regards for the people on Ivillage, they are far too intelligent for this type of nonsense. As you continue to reply, it only adds fuel to the fire. Please use your energy to elect your canidate(whoever that maybe)
I saw a documentary where many people were saying that they were voting how their preacher "told them" to vote (I'm sure it was a round-about suggestion, less the church lose its tax-exempt status). Many followed their preachers/ churches lock-in-step when voting for certain issues, and for candidates who came down on one side of an issue or another. They let their pastors do the thinking for them.
I'm not for a moment suggesting that everyone who attends church does this. However, some do, and perhaps in their minds, it was impossible imagine Obama not following suit with his own minister.
I paid a lot of attention to this story as it unfolded, and I was generally impressed with Obama's handling of it. I remember thinking this. My grandmother and my parents have gone to the same church for over 20 years. In that time, there have been 5 different pastors. One was loved by all, and the rest have had various levels of support. The previous pastor drove my grandmother particularly crazy. She complained about her opinions, on the direction she was taking the church, and just about everything else she did. However, my grandmother continued to worship there because she was not a mere member of a minister's flock-she was a member of a congregation, a community. Here involvement in that chuch is deeper than her personal relationship with the minister. She prays for those who are in need as a part of a morning prayer chain, she tirelessly helps out at every rummage sale, and she attends every Sunday service (only to turn around and complain about the sermon - LOL).
I don't know the Obama family personally, but I can easily see how someone can filter out statements they don't agree with from a single individual if it meant that they were able to maintain their relationship with the church. The Obama family could have filtered out "old school" statements made by the man and still find value in some of his messages. Maybe Obama thought of himself as a member of a congregation rather than memmber of the Rev. Wright fanclub and discipleship.
also, Oprah Winfrey and many other prominant black chicago VIPS belonged to that church. Have you accused OOprah of racism? written to her? Why don't you judge her? Because her words and actions clearly demonstrate that SHE does not hold those views.
Obama DID distance himself from this church as soon as this came out. The preacher reacted badly and even insulted Obama. He didn't get a pass, He frankly and openly discussed the issue. His willingness to do that is admirable. No lying and sneaking or excuses. Do you read the news?

Or you could simply go back and see what appalled him.

I think you bring up a really important point.
