Thoughts on Paul Ryan?

I'm kind of new to iVillage, so I hope I'm posting in the right place!

I was just wondering what you think about Romney's VP choice.  I don't know a lot about Paul Ryan, so I don't have much of an opinion yet.

I note that the study was from 2005 and the phrase "to the left of the average member of Congress" would not have been particularly damning since Congress at the time was dominated by conservatives/Republicans. I suppose they decided to use Congress as the standard of comparison but that's a scientific method shortcut. A no-no. More scrupulous researchers would probably have used a statistically-significant random sampling of respondents.

Also was wondering how they defined "the center".

After giving the study a quick once over, have come to the conclusion that certain aspects of their methodology are questionable and some of their "conclusions" are not borne out by either logic or facts.  If you would like I can give you examples.

P.S. Political science was my college major. If Paul Ryan can be an economist, I can be a political scientist..........

FYI, one of the study's authors went on to write a book titled "“Left Turn: How Liberal Media Bias Distorts the American Mind.” By using the word "distort", he indicated his own bias. Had he wished to simply make a case indicating that the media are more likely to be liberal than conservative, the wording would have been much less leading.

the part where they discuss Medicare reform, is missing. At least, I don't see it, nor is it in the transcript of what aired. I wonder why?

Hi, Everyone..

In a few moments, we'll be hiding this thread while we remove a number of TOS violations. We will then put the remainder of the thread back.

In order to avoid having your post removed, and your membership jeopardized (as three removals after a reminder will result in revocation of posting rights), please be sure, before you post, that you are debating the topic and not the poster.

You do not have to agree, but be respectful. The personal jabs and comments towards each other are unnecessary. It does not help to make your point about the political topic when you are pushing another for proof or making an implication about them personally.

This is another great topic but it's being ruined by posts designed to poke at individuals instead.

Please continue to "Report a Violation" as necessary and let us handle it rather than responding to defend your position. If someone in particular bothers you, report and scroll past their post. We will continue to remove posts.

Thank you for your help in keeping the board on topic and respectful to everyone, no matter where they fall on the political spectrum.

You provided half the story. Still missing the other half. Don't blame me for your omission. As for the recruiting of your eight year old daughter to do PART of what you would not, I have to say that it looks worse for you than it does for me! Once again, if one makes the claim, one provides all the facts necessary for proof; or one accepts that a claim is without merit.

Even the study to which you linked, coming from authors whose objectivity is very much open to question, does NOT claim that "Fox was one of the few news outlets that was found to be unbiased in its news programming".

I looked online to see if anybody had done an academic and peer-reviewed analysis of Fox's news department (BTW, since the network calls itself Fox News there's an immediate compromising of the thin red line between opinion and fact). Found this: http://qje.oxfordjournals.org/content/122/3/1187.abstract There are plenty of other sources which question Fox's bias but they're not from academe. Since the link you submitted wasn't particularly scholarly in thesis, methodology or logic; I guess there's no reason to limit the discussion to studies generated by pollsters or professors; so here are several more: http://www.aolnews.com/2010/12/23/opinion-conservative-media-bias-exposed/; http://www.outsidethebeltway.com/conservative-media-bias/; http://www.fair.org/index.php?page=1067/; http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2012/08/infographic-of-the-day-do-the-mainstream-media-have-a-conservative-bias/260772/; well, that's just some of the links on the first page on a Google search for "conservative media bias". Enjoy.

Just for the record, when you posted about the parts being edited out of the interview, it took me almost an entire minute to find a story verifying that it happened.

http://www.timesherald.com/article/20120816/OPINION03/120819671/schram-on-60-minutes--no-time-for-romney-ryan-medicare-plan

Because CBS cut a one-minute-11-second snippet from Bob Schieffer’s interview of Romney and Ryan — yes, the part that contained the Medicare Q&A. Here, courtesy of CBS News, is the snippet you missed: ...

I won't post the entire article since that's a little rude and, as I noted, is quite easily found.

Yeah, I thought it was a pretty easy thing to find. My 8 yr. old loves looking up things on youtube, so I put her on the task. She enjoyed doing it and found it rather quickly, too. She is only allowed to use the computer with my supervision, but I didn't have to help her....:smileyhappy:

I am curious. Did you see the comments Doug Wilder made in reference to Joe Biden's statement on Tuesday? Wilder was a democratic governor of Virginia and he had some strong criticism for Biden. I'm sure that you can find the entire link, so I won't link to it, but here is a portion of what he said:

“First of all, without question they were appeals to race,” Wilder said. “The important thing I got out of this was Biden separated himself from what he accused the people of doing. As a matter of fact, what he said is they are going to do something to y’all, not to me. Not us. So he was still involved with that separate American.”

I find it amazing that some  In the media and in the democrat party are trying to excuse it away.......

If a substantiating link was "a pretty easy thing to find", why the footdragging on posting such? I really am curious. BTW, Fox and other conservative outlets were quite active in probing this truly earthshaking headline-making omission. Even beat out the story about finding water and humanoid life on Mars [tongue in cheek].

As for Joe Biden, he pretty regularly opens mouth to insert foot. I asked my DH last night WHY Obama chose JB as his veep. DH said he couldn't think of a better reason for all of us, especially the Secret Service to make sure that nothing ever happened to Obama. Then he wondered if it was possible that there simply weren't higher life forms interested in becoming politicians.

So they cut out a blatant Romney lie. How does that help Obama?

According to the CBO's own report Obamacare takes money from Medicare to pay for other aspects of the healthcare law. Here is a youtube video where even Obama agrees with that.....(Watch him nod his head and say "right" when asked about the cuts to Medicare)
