Can I ask - what does this term mean to you?

It is still used a lot in the national conversation, but I'm sure that everyone has their own idea of what it means.

I'm happy to share mine but I'm going to toss the word "traditional" and put "enduring" in its place.

"Traditional Family Values" to me means a married couple (man and woman) raising children, very religious Christians, social conservatives, SAHM mom raising kids while dad works.

Well, hmm, I think I have the 'traditional family' however I am not a SAHM.

The stereotype or what I think it means?

To me it means teaching love, honesty, leading by example, do unto others as you would like done unto you, taking care of the needs of your family first, being there for each other in good times and bad.

"Now, if you asked me if I thought that was the best way for a family I would point back to my upbringing with a single mom that I couldn't imagine anything more loving or 'better'.

I think you're raising some of the questions we had - how would WE describe traditional family values, and are they jiving with the popular definition?

I think, if I remember correctly, "family values" became the popular phrase after Dan Quayle criticized fictional Murphy Brown for having a baby out of wedlock (I think he thought she should have terminated the pregnancy and focused on her career).

I guess it makes me wonder - is having a 'traditional family' in any way important to having traditional family values?

"Are traditional family values just defined by the make-up of the family, or is it defined by the things a more non-traditional family may hold dear? The standards they hold themselves to?
