I've always had some interest in politics, and my DH was a member of our local Elephant Club (Republican boosters), though he's not particularly "active." He hasn't canvassed for a campaign or anything. Well...I became acutely aware of politics at the national level in the months leading up to the ill-fated invasion of Iraq. It was quite clear that we were being led by the nose, and there was little we could do to stop it. I began to take a much more critical look at the power of the media (which strongly promoted the invasion) and at the difference between what I was hearing/reading and what I was hearing from friends in the military. Plus, I got a new cable television service in the months after 911, and I had access to BBC-America. Wow! What an eye opener! The rest of the world wasn't hearing the same "coverage" of the news that we were. There were significant doubts about the case being made in the USA for the invasion. And, time proved that those international doubts were spot-on, and our own news coverage here in the USA was inadequate and biased toward war. So, I'm more curious and critical than I used to be.

I was not very interested in politics at all until I met my DH.

Hey, your DH sounds just like mine! He isn't that happy with Obama right now, but it's because he's not far enough to the left! (he's also a Chomsky, Kucinich fan!)

We had always voted, and voted both times for Clinton, and his terms were good times for us. Then in 2000, with the whole recount thing, we started getting more interested. THEN, after 9/11 and around 2003 at the onset of the war, we finally got a GOOD computer & internet connection, and it was like the WORLD opened up from there.
Now,my dh is Joe Politics (Dem version). He holds seats on committees, is a member/delegate of the state party, president of a club, does voter canvassing, works on various campaigns....short of running for office, he does a LOT!
