What Obama means by tax the wealthy
Here's a closer look at how the Democratic candidate defines well-off for different households, and what his proposals will mean for them.

"When the median income (the upper bound of that median yet) qualifies for food assistance it should give you some idea of how incredibly difficult it is for people making that income vs those making $250,000."

I agree...but I also look at it like this: If someone is in the so called median income and qualifies for food assistance, I no longer think of that as "middle class", and would imagine that those individuals (either the dh or the dw) making $125,000 are more comfortable than we are, but certainly not "rich".

"Imagine trying to live at a place where your natural inclination is to say the cost of living is so high that 250K is "middle" and trying to make it on 50K. "

BTDT. Napa, California. When we were buying our first home, prices there were (and pretty much still are) $850K for a simple 1800sq ft 4 bedroom, 2 bath house. We had to go to Lake County to be able to afford to work in the Napa/Santa Rosa areas.

" (your family size is such that this might well not be the case for a typical family of 4). "

Agreed and point conceded.

I think we agree -- the median income is no longer middle class, the middle class is disappearing.

I think we talked about this

I will agree with you that in some areas of the country you HAVE to be making between 125,000--250,000 to live anywhere near comfortable. In my area, 250,000 would be quite comfortable. We don't make anywhere near 100,000, but we have been frugal all our married life, so we are what I would say doing OK. We have never lived beyond our means.

On the contrary, I'm not talking about Lowes, I'm talking about a family owned lumber yard, the kind you don't see anymore because of companies like Lowes.

I have not said, nor intended to infer, that ALL of the nation's woes were caused by one party.
