What Obama means by tax the wealthy
Here's a closer look at how the Democratic candidate defines well-off for different households, and what his proposals will mean for them.

Because your family is fortunate not to need it and other families do?
How is that a problem? That amount is about less than 1/2 year's of worth of lattes at Starbucks, or about 8 weeks fillups on the SUVs. Those in that income bracket have the choice of giving up designer coffee, buying a more fuel efficient vehicle, taking public transportation to offset this minor blip.
I think the person earning 32K has more pressing needs for that $500 in these economic times than the 170K earner. Food, fuel, housing costs are rising more than they can absorb in savings.

NEED not DESERVE.
I disagree with you, but I'm pretty sure
Do you know what REALLY gets my goat and chaps my hide? Just because someone makes MORE money doesn't mean they work HARDER than somone who makes a lot less. There are PLENTY of extremely hard working blue collared workers who work their cajones off to try to make a living, people who do back breaking work who stand on their feet 7 out of 8 hours every day! They don't get big raises or bonuses or anything else, but they DO WORK HARD.
Capitalism was never designed to reward everyone on an equal basis who simply "work hard", and thank god ! America became #1 in the world due to working hard, but more importantly working smart, making individual sacrifices and taking risks.
If America did work that way, we would not be a nation of highly skilled workers and the envy of the rest of the world.
Way too many Americans think if they get up every day, and give up 8-10 hours of their day, they are entitled to "get ahead". That's not making a sacrifice, that's being complacent. Making a sacrifice means giving up nights, weekends, holidays or all three, foregoing relationships and time with friends/family to ENSURE you get ahead whether its learning a trade, getting an advanced degree or starting a business.
What I've learned is not to trust ANY entity, whether public, private or government to look out for my long-term prosperity. Just look at Enron, MCI, Bethleham Steel, and the fact that even governments at every level have had layoffs. Job security is a state of mind......create your own !
I do indeed feel sorry for the folks who spent 20+ years of their lives at Enron for nothing, but there's also corruption in planned economies.
I have no disdain for blue collar workers, having been one myself. I just realized one day that statistically the body fails before the mind, so I would be better served by using my mind to earn a living.
Capitalism is both a blessing and a curse. Its a blessing if you realize you HAVE to leverage your time, skills, resources, and intelligence on a consistent basis to achieve success (that is subjective) in order to obtain whatever price the market will bear. Its a curse if you believe you don't have to occasionally reassess acting in your own best interests, thereby leaving your fate in someone's else's hands.
Americans should not fooled by a hope and a change speech.......we would benefit more from something along the lines of JFK - An individual inspiration of sorts, not group therapy.
BTW - To suggest higher taxes during an economic slowdown would just deepen the slowdown; most businesses simply cannot keep raising prices of goods/services, so they'll just freeze hiring, salaries, convert employee positions to independent contractors, reduce or cut benefits, or as a last resort, have layoffs. All of these are bad for the economy.
The economy wasn't doing all that bad BEFORE Bush took office and gave all those tax cuts that benefitted the very wealthy. What I DO remember what happened AFTER Bush gave these tax cuts, that benefitted the top 10% of the population the very most was ----Cut backs, lay-offs, downscaling of businesses, more outsourcing. NOT more JOBS or better increases in workers pays. I don't know what company you work for, but where I worked we bearly got a 3% increase, then on top of that, our employee co-pays went up on the Health ins. Rules became more strict for taking time off. Even people who never abused their time off, myself as one of those dedicated workers who NEVER took time off except for my scheduled vacations had to deal with the flack when I did become sick as if I were one who called out of work frequently. I did work in the Healthcare sector, so I DID give up WEEKENDS and HOLIDAYS.
Enron was in business 20 years? HMMM, didn't know that. Are you sure about that? I know Bethlehem Steel had been for years and years, but they fell because of poor management and wanting to make it cheaper overseas. Pennsylvania House furniture is made in China now, never used to be.
