What Obama means by tax the wealthy
Here's a closer look at how the Democratic candidate defines well-off for different households, and what his proposals will mean for them.

See Laura, you worked hard, made choices different than me, and because I make less than you...I DESERVE the credit more than you do. Maybe if you wouldn't work so hard you'd get a child tax credit too!!
That's not a fair statement, sounds like you're saying only the wealthy work hard.
Wow, you have the choice to spend 30K on childcare, but you begrudge the 32K family getting 500 in tax relief? What childcare choices does the does the 32k family have?
I don't have a problem with them getting a break, but why should I pay more?
You actually don't have to make much
My husband is also a salaried employee.
You are aware Bush inherited a RECESSION from Clinton; the stock market drop from 2000 - 2002 was the largest since the Great Depression.
Bush's tax cuts helped everyone, but add in the cost of 9/11 and Katrina (the costliest disaster in US history) & you've got a recipe for financial disaster. Are you aware that when Clinton raised taxes, GDP actually fell ? Add in the cost of the global war on terror, Iraq, reckless spending on pork/earmarks by both parties, as well as entitlement spending & you're gonna have problems.
By the way, entitlement spending far exceeds the cost of the war on terror/Iraq at $2 trillion a year. These programs need to be revamped
I'm a small business owner, so I EARNED a 25% pay increase last year. I did not take any vacations, worked many evenings and weekends, and had little time to date.
Because we are now in a global economy, American businesses have to be more competitive which can hurt employees.
You NEED to have a plan B, and not be so trusting of a manmade entity to look out for you.
Maybe you can turn a hobby into an extra $500 - $1,000 a month.
If you are not passionate about your livelyhood, your commute, your employer, your pay, or whatever, you owe it to yourself to get the hell outta there ! And quick.
I have no doubt you are a hard working person, but if corporate america is not as loyal to employees as it used to be, start putting yourself first.
Man, YOU CAN DO IT ! There is no room or time to think about "why". How is the only word you should be focusing on.
Enron's origins go back to 1985......you can google it
Of course not.
My problem with Liberals is that they ALWAYS look at tax increases first, instead of squeezing the inefficiences and fraud out of government problems.
That's why I'm voting Mccain, since he has much more of a record on trying to cut government waste. I also may vote Libertarian if he has at least $500 million in his coffers.......otherwise he won't get any electoral votes
"A 170K income should afford a pretty good lifestyle as less than 5% of the US population earn that much."
Individuals, or families?
I too took out loans, scholarships, and worked my way through school as I was one of 5 kids, so there was no way my parents were going to pay for us all to go to college....though they insisted that we get some type of training or college after high school.
"That's not a fair statement, sounds like you're saying only the wealthy work hard. I beg to differ. Most people who are poor work their BUTTS off, just to feed their families. I'm actually pretty offended by that statement. My husband and I happen to work VERY hard."
Than you, like the pp, need to take a deep breath and read what's actually written rather than make assumptions. I try to chose my words VERY carefully around here, and I NEVER said she worked HARDER than me. I said she worked hard, contrary to the thought that the "rich" are all trust fund babies. And no doubt, she most certainly made different (and get this, I didn't even say BETTER) choices than me.
You can chose to be offended if you want, but you're most certainly putting words and thoughts into my mouth and post that were NOT there. I COULD be offended by that, but I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt that you are having a rough morning.
