Why are you/did you vote for Obama
| Mon, 11-03-2008 - 12:26pm |
Can someone nicely tell me the reasons you support Obama?
I just can't figure it out...it SEEMS alot of people support him b/c he's the "popular" choice or because he's black. What is he going to do that benefits you?
Thanks in advance

I am by no means a one-issue voter, but one of the major reasons I will vote for Obama is diplomacy.
We don't depend on the government for our children's education, they go to a private school parttime and homeschool the rest...so that doesn't effect me
It is just so wrong,
This is why I'm voting for Obama:
Economics - My family will not benefit from Obama's tax plan because we own a real-estate business and the capital gains tax increase will hit us (though this is not true for the vast majority of small businesses). BUT, I prefer Obama's plan because I believe in the philosophy behind it. He wants to pay for what we spend rather than continuing to astronomically run up the annual deficit and national debt endlessly. We are in a huge hole as a country because of the last 8 years - war, lack of regulation leading to the bail-out, tax cuts, etc - and are essentially mortgaging ourselves to the countries that are willing to insure our ridiculous habit of living outside our means. Giving everyone a tax cut will not help us fill that hole and neither will McCain's plan to "cut pork barrel" that literally represents a drop in the bucket relative to other spending. I, personally, would prefer to tax individuals that are likely to have more money than they need to live perfectly well than make the people who are already struggling, struggle further. In addition, Obama has some of the best and most respected advisers in the world and I trust that he listens to them rather than erratically swinging from one idea to the next to see what sticks.
Supreme court nominees - There absolutely needs to be balance to the extremely conservative court that has been constructed over the last 8 years. I think this is one of the biggest issues for the country not because of Roe vs. Wade but more because of ALL of the other decisions from immigration to environmental that the court weighs in on. Their decisions have HUGE ramifications for the country and their recent decisions have scared me.
Education - as others have pointed out, public education is about what is good for the public, not just your child. McCain's "plan" is a farce. No Child Left Behind absolutely needs to be changed and real attention needs to be payed to access to college education. Obama's plan is research based and focuses on early childhood education and increasing scholarship dollars that have shrunk recently.
Environment - we are at a point where both private and public investment in finding alternative fuels is necessary. Creative market based solutions like a carbon cap and trade system and generating a serious industry around "green" options makes complete sense to me. It is an investment as much as an expenditure that is likely to create wealth and keep the US competitive in world energy markets. I would love to see a space race level of investment in this sector. Plus, we need to restore clean air and water regulations that were gutted under Bush.
Health care - every analysis I've seen shows that McCain's plan would potentially give less people access to health insurance rather than more. So, while Obama's may not be perfect, it is better and focuses far more on prevention and access than McCain's.
Iraq - this is one where I don't know the best answer. I didn't support going in but don't support just pulling out without stabilizing the country first. Obama is more likely to get out sooner without being irresponsible about it. McCain scares me with his notion that we should stay until we "win." You notice he can't say what winning will look like or offer any sense of when that might come about or how to get there.
International reputation - we watched Bush squander the world's good will and now most of the world rightfully thinks we're fools that unabashedly violate human rights while hypocritically accusing other countries of violating human rights. We need to change that behavior because it is wrong and because we are no longer respected as a leader on those issues. Obama believes in diplomacy (as well as force and sanctions when needed) and the world is willing to give him a chance. I think he'll fundamentally alter our relationship with other countries in positive ways.
I could go on but it comes down to this - I trust that Obama has a better decision making style and philosophies with which I am aligned. I love that he is a biracial black man (it's not why I'm voting for him but it is absolutely something I value) and I think it is a necessary thing for our country to elect someone with his caliber of intellect.
Why are you voting for McCain?
I am voting for Obama because I believe he is the best choice.
Here's a link to a similar thread I started. It may help give you more insight as to why those of us who vote(d) for Obama have chosen to do so.

Sadly, I thought it was sincere at first.
I will be voting for Obama for several reasons.
I disagree with you, but I'm pretty sure
