"What if Obama were a soldier who served his country and was captured fighting on it's behalf, and McCain were a community organizer?"

I think the Republicans would find a way to Swiftboat Obama and would laud (rather than ridicule) McCain's dedication to community.

"What if McCain was married to a woman who said that the first time she was proud of her country was when it looked like her husband was going to be nominated, and Obama was married to a woman who donated significant time and money to charity?"

Honestly, I don't think people would care. Notice that people do focus on Cindy McCain's charitable service and not her drug problems and yet fixate on Michelle Obama's comment without looking at the paid work she has done her entire adult life to improve society.

"What if McCain had claimed as his mentor a pastor who preached racist sermons and Obama was known as a maverick in his party who regularly extended his hand across the aisle to get things done?"

That would require that McCain actually go to church.

"See, it's not a matter of race, is it?"

I think the McCain campaign would be trying to take Obama down no matter what race he was. But I think their use of him middle name lately is intended to inspire race related fear (not black-white but Arab-white). And yes, I think that as a black man, Obama has to have achieved at a higher level to be taken seriously. I don't think race matters for every voter but yes, I think it is a major factor in the dynamics of our country.

Race certainly is no issue for me.

you prove my point - it's not about race, it's about partisanship.

I think you need to re-read the main point of the post:

"I think the McCain campaign would be trying to take Obama down no matter what race he was. But I think their use of his middle name is intended to inspire race related fear (not black-white but Arab-white). And yes, I think that as a black man, Obama has to have achieved at a higher level to be taken seriously (I will add to this that his wife also is held to a different standard). I don't think race matters for every voter but yes, I think it is a major factor in the dynamics of our country."

Race is not a factor for me.

I'm voting for Obama because I agree with him on the issues.

I agree *gasp* haha there are definitely racists on both sides and no I agree it should never be a reason to vote for or against a particular candidate.
