We have had employer sponsored health insurance (they pay part of the premiums) since 1987. In 2001 one of our children was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes (an autoimmune disease, not lifestyle related; we had no family history of this) and in 2006 another child was diagnosed with Type 1. Last year we paid about $12000 for our medical bills, including the part of the insurance premiums for which we were responsible. When our children can no longer be covered by our insurance policy, they may not be insurable because of their "preexisting condition". This would be disastrous for us and them; diabetes care for the indigent in the U.S. is marginal at best. One would think that preventing the complications associated with high blood glucose would be considered worth paying for, but the policy of the U.S. government heretofore has been to skimp on preventive care, and then pay for the expensive treatments (like kidney transplants) needed because prevention was "too costly".
Are you paying out of pocket for everything with your little girl and the twins? That has got to be costing you an arm and a leg. I am really sorry, hopefully you'll be able to get some soon.
Have you considered an HSA? Health savings account? The financial guy I listen to on th radio recommends them for people that don't have employer provided insurance. Basically, the payments are pretty low because they don't cover small stuff like checkups. There is a $5000 deductible per year. Sounds like something that might work for you.
Yes, I have great coverage. I'm really not worried about Obama when it comes to health care. I don't think it would affect my coverage. Health care is one of the few issues where I'm more left leaning.
Wow, we would be so broke without insurance. Our IVF would have been $10,000.00, my delivery would have been $10,000.00, my hospital stay would have been $45,000.00 (I got really, really sick after I had ds), my ds's hospital stay was $5,000.00. With all off the stuff that has been going on with me (having a lot of issues with passing out) we would be bankrupt by now.

Yes, and yes it is.
Yes, we have insurance and it's LOUSY.
I know with twins it may not be an option but for your first delivery did you consider a home birth? Just curious. :-)

I have universal health care coverage and wouldn't give it up for anything.
