If you don't have a grand or two of disposable income each month (and even if you do most likely) you simply could not afford for one of you to develop a serious acute or chronic illness.
I have two children with mental illness and one with celiac disease and type 1 diabetes.
Many, many Americans do not have health coverage and cannot get any. If you lose your job, or your husband loses his job - there goes your health insurance. Sure, you can apply for COBRA, but the payments might be as much as $500 a month. Not easy to afford if you are unemployed! Of course, you could try to apply for a cheaper health insurance plan on your own, but good luck with that - unless you are in PERFECT health, they will not cover you. For example, if you've ever taken anti-depressant drugs, you won't qualify. In fact, you might even be disqualified for something as simple as poor vision or a history of yeast infections.

But wouldn't it be great if there was a national network that small businesses could afford to buy into that could provide them and their employees with affordable private insurance?

I don't believe it will be what is promised, and seriously doubt it will be anything it's cracked up to be.
I don't know what it is in your state, but for a family of 4 in PA making more than 63,600 will pay 168.00 per month per child. So in Pa, there is no limit. that is the amount that puts you into the At cost level.

Let me just put it this way, because my SO owns his busines, his income is tied into what the business "earns."

Believe me, I know that.

Unless one of your children develops diabetes, or something else that isn't covered by catastrophic/hospitilization insurance.

I was about to say the same to you! Our system may have it's faults, but I can't imagine life without it.
