However, things will not change immediately:
"Despite the favorable ruling for same-sex couples, gay marriage will not be allowed to resume immediately. Judge Walker said he wants to decide whether his order should be suspended while the proponents of the ban pursue their appeal in the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
The judge ordered both sides to submit written arguments by Aug. 6 on the issue."

BLECCH! This is only yet another step in the long journey for equal marriage rights... While I'm encouraged, I am frustrated that this decision is not going to mean things are finalized... ://
As I have always believed, this right to marry needs to be declared by the federal gov't so that no state can ever again discriminate against same sex couples and denying them their right to marry. To have to fight this out state by state, and seeing all the crap still to come even here in California, it's really just sickening that there is no real final sense of victory to this decision today.

Great news, and the only correct ruling, IMHO.
Unfortunately, the haters have already appealed. On to the next fight!
YESSS!!!!
It is a small step, and yes the haters appealed, but this is a landmark precedent.
People cannot vote on who can and cannot get to have civil rights based on race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age...
We seem to have to fight for each one of those designations one at a time because we are a people who can't seem to learn EVER, but at least this precedent is one that I cannot forsee ever being surmounted by ignorance and hatred again.

I agree, but I am not familiar enough with the structure of US government to know if federal law can enforce this on every state.
There was some awesome ownage on the news tonight.
Apparently one of the prop 8 lawyers live in AZ and they were talking to him and a gay couple about the ruling.
So the anchor asks the lawyer something along the lines of what damage has the thousands of legal gay marriages done to traditional marriage. The lawyer responded that the question couldn't be answered.
I read transcripts and the ruling, the defense really failed to show why it is harmful and really despite the sex of the people in the relationship there is no difference.

They can't. There is no evidence. And they had better not try to find any, because they'll have to lay down some ugly borders which could end up excluding heterosexuals of different religions, or the same religion but people who've been divorced or are in abusive marriages, people whose spouses have been unfaithful but were forgiven, etc.

I was watching some reports last night, and there were some snippets from the ruling - the judge basically eviscerated the pro-8 folks - said they were simply putting out opinion as if it were fact, and that they had provided absolutely nothing to back up their claims.
Which makes perfect sense, since there is NOTHING to back up their claims!
