i have a word for elior: hasidim. the zealousness for purity which she objects to as unlikely in the essene stories is not unprecedented.

It was at the time the Scrolls were written, though, wasn't it? Hasidism did not arise until the 1700s CE.

that was the 3rd wave, so to speak. the original hasidim arose around 300 bce, to combat the hellenization of the jewish people.

This makes sense to me, especially as the source the author mentioned of Josephus' comparing of the sect to Spartans in order to use an admired parallel.
