Italian Jewish Leader blasts Pope
Sun, 01-17-2010 - 8:19pm

""An Italian Jewish leader told Pope Benedict Sunday that his wartime predecessor Pius XII should have spoken out more forcefully against the Holocaust to show solidarity with Jews being led to the "ovens of Auschwitz."

The comments, from the president of Rome's Jewish community Riccardo Pacifici, were made during the pope's first visit to Rome's synagogue and were some of the bluntest ever spoken by a Jewish leader in public to a pope.

"The silence of Pius XII before the Shoah, still hurts because something should have been done," Pacifici told the pope, using the Hebrew word for the Holocaust.""

Link continues article.

From what I can gather, the compliant stems from Pope Bendict's advancement of Pope Pius XII toward sainthood. Pacifici claims that Pius should have spoken up during the Holocaust.

I am so glad the leader blasted Benedict. Either the Vatican opens archives to prove that Pius did try to help the Jews, or they stopped trying to make him a saint.

The sanctification process, btw, was made easier by the other person up for beatification- John Paul II. It used to be MUCH harder.

it's about time. neglecting to speak out against the nazi atrocities as they were happening was a failure on every front.
