Well, bah humbug.

Earlier today we reported that Gap had turned to "Glee" for inspiration for its new "Holiday Cheer" ad campaign, which features the tagline "Go Christmas, Go Hanukkah, Go Kwanzaa, Go Solstice" in its inclusive "Happy Whateveryouwannakah" ad.

Now, however, a Christian group has announced that they will boycott Gap Inc. because they feel the ads are "offensive," Brand Week reports.

Ya beat me to it!

I just don't get these groups. I mean what do they want. First they complain that Christmas is too commercial. When they make it less commercial there are too many Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas.
As an aside, last year a co worker of mine wished a customer a Happy Holiday. The customer asked if the company was making her say it and they weren't. The customer threatened to cancel her entire order if my coworker didn't wish her a Merry Christmas.

Um, yeah. That's coz it IS a joke that people are so touchy that including all the December holidays in an ad for a CLOTHING SHOP offended them.

I thought the ad itself was beyond cheez, but the idea is cool.

Oh, yeah, 'tis the season for the usual arrogant and disgruntled "let's disrespect everybody else who has holidays at this time of year, and demand exclusivity!!!" (eye roll) A big BRAVO! to Gap for its efforts to rise above all that sour attitude, and trying to be inclusive in our diverse world and country.

The only plus side of the AFA is that they help define what is unacceptable behaviour with their own.

Well, so much for peace on earth goodwill towards men.

First there were complaints that the word "Christmas" wasn't being used. Now the word Christmas IS being used and they are STILL complaining.

Let's face it, they won't be happy until every retailer in the nation turns into a fundamentalist Christian house of worship. They will demand that ONLY fundamentalist Christians be hired during the Christmas season, and that ONLY fundamentalist Christians be allowed as customers during THIER season.

Kinda like how they want the gov't funded faith based social services to be run.

Sheesh !

edit to add: I have been thinking about going to the Gap and buying some of their "Party Carties" I love cardigans sweators and never seem to have enough of them. Now that I know that the AFA and other right wing whacko's are boycotting them, I just might make it a point to go and buy those cardigans from the Gap. Besides, they are the first retailer I have ever heard of to mention Solstice. That alone is enough to make me want to give them my business.

It turns out that the mention of Solstice is what really has their knickers in a twist.

http://action.afa.net/Detail.aspx?id=2147489678

Excerpt from the link:
----------------------------------------------------
Did you notice it? Gap compares Christmas to the pagan holiday called "Solstice." Solstice is celebrated by Wiccans who practice witchcraft!

Gap also encourages you to "86" or "dismiss" traditions and "do what feels just right."

Take our Poll! Since Gap has now included the word "Christmas" in a television ad, should AFA call for an end to the boycott of their stores?

------------------------------------------------------
ROFLMAO - They STOLE most of their Christmas traditions from the Pagan celebration to begin with, now they've got a bug up their keesters, because someone is "comparing" the two. Unbelievable !

That, and saying "Solstice is celebrated by Wiccans who practice witchcraft" is pretty similar to saying "Christmas is celebrated by Lutherans who practice yoga!"

Um... Solstice is celebrated by a LOT of Pagan traditions, not just Wicca.

And not all Wiccans practice witchcraft, and not all those who practice witchcraft are Wiccan.

That is what I was thinking last night in one of my clearer moments (been a little under the weather). I don't shop at Gap because there aren't any near me, but I think that to not shop at a store because they did mention Christmas is nuts. AFA needs to grow up.
