I'd always accepted as fact (particularly with regard to sex) that the more restrictive a society was, the more the public chooses unhealthy outlets for sex. This came from having relatives in far less puritanical countries (Ireland, Finland) who have far lower rates of rape per capita and far lower sex crime rate per capita. The same acts are crimes in each of the countries, so it wasn't that the USA was claiming viewing porn was a crime while Finland says it's not, as a hypothetical example.

Growing up next to, and working in, New York City, I saw maybe a handful of sex shops in my entire life up through age 25. In my first YEAR in Arlington, Texas, I saw DOZENS.

Observationally, I suppose I never questioned it as absolute fact that the more you try to repress something, the more it blows up in your face. Not just sexuality, either. Everything.

I think it's a fair point to say that they should be looking at other forms of porn.

Wasn't he marvellous! I felt sorry for Christian Bale - it was like he was there to have someone for Heath Ledger, Morgan Freeman, Aaron Eckhart

I worked in New York City 1969-1970, Avenue of the America (6th Avenue) and 47th street. The area, Times Square in particular, was a sea of porn shops, porn movie theaters and prostitution, open prostitution on the streets, it was difficult to walk to Penn Station, on 34th street, without being propositioned numerous times.

My daughters and I toured NYC in 2001, about a month before 9/11, and the difference was dramatic, Times Square had really changed.

This is probably due more to the availability of porn for home use through DVDs and the Internet rather than to social mores. The area was unbelievably sleazy in the late 60s and early 70s.

I was born in the early 70s,

Oh, my goodness, I'm old enough to be your dad!

Now see here, young lady! You are not going out tonight, you went out last night! Did you put gas in the car after you used it last? What exactly were you doing all that time in Times Square in the 90s? Did I say you could go?

You're grounded for a month of Sundays!
