Mormons vs. Big Love

Ok so I watch Big Love and I live in Utah.

So this week, Big Love does about 10 minutes of Barb going to the temple to have her endowments.

I have been to temple open houses but have never been to the temple to do endowments because I am (and will never be) "worthy" to go to the temple (i.e., member in good standing, give tithing, dont drink, etc).

Anyway, I guess people are UP IN ARMS about this scene because it is VERY accurate and portrays rituals that happen in the temple that only members in good standings can do. The Mormons are really angry and basically want Big Love's head.

My complaint is that although they probably shouldn't have shown it and it really wasn't essential for forwarding the story, there are many times that other rituals from other churches have been shown. I mean really, did they expect to keep it a secret forever? You can google the rituals.

It doesn't surprise me that they would exploit and distort a religion. What surprises me is that the Mormons are so outraged by it. It has and will continue to happen to all religions and really all groups of people we do not understand. There are religions that have been around for centuries that are distorted all the time.

Your thoughts?

As a Mormon...I am disappointed, but as I don't have HBO, I couldn't comment on the show itself. I didn't join any boycott or write to HBO about it, simply because what better way to get people to watch a show than to tell them not to watch it?

I don't appreciate being told, for lack of a better word, to get over it that HBO did it. Those are my sacred ceremonies and rituals, and I would never talk about other faiths ceremonies and rituals if I knew they shouldn't be blabbed about or recreated. It is about respect. Do I expect people to respect that part of my faith? No. Do I hope they do? Yes.

I'm a Utah Mormon & I'm not outraged by it but just really disappointed & saddened that the things people know we hold most sacred about our religion are played out through the media for cheap entertainment purposes, despite our asking for them not to be & for all the world to see.

I remember when this show came out some seasons ago. It's not a documentary, right? It's a fictional series? Perhaps I have the wrong impression? Maybe I am totally mistaken? I don't have HBO, either, and so have never seen the show. Unfortunately, when "Hollywood" makes movies or series, there are usually no guarantees of respect, beliefs, inner more private dogma/doctrine will not be used as "fodder" for the story line, or even treated respectfully. Movies. TV series. Books. I find it also interesting a TV series called "Saving Grace" when it first came out, was also much talked about, about the Catholic Faith, too, and how disrespectful. Now it's been on several seasons, about a sexy female cop/detective, sleeping around with a married man, heavy drinker, lots of angst, sharing an angel with a criminal, etc. And I hear less about that series now, and yet starting a new season. I see other religions used disrespectfully in series or movies, too. The new "Angels and Demons" coming out in May. Etc.

How fact and fiction is blended legally is fascinating. Do lawsuits work? They didn't stop the new movie, or the "DaVinci Code" from being made. Some locations were blocked from being used on the movie sets, threats to sue Tom Hanks and the movie studio, were made. More fodder to get people to watch the movies, etc. I agree respect should be extended and obseved in how beliefs are handled, but I'm a bit cynical about expecting it to actually happen in the big money of entertainment industry. :( Boycotting, protesting, often has the opposite desired effect. I am sorry about offense. Every religion or spiritual tradition seems to get targeted. :(( Reiki is being currently being targeted, too. The list is neverending. :((

One thing the show forgot is that a person living in a polygamous marriage is not a member in good standing and would not get a recommend at all

I also live in Utah and don't care to even watch the show

The church did not call for any boycotts because they realized making too big a deal of it beyond the initial complaint would only draw more attention to the show

That was stated and she "borrowed" the recommend to go. There was one error though (at least one that even I knew) - they are in the celestial room and they said "your 15 minutes are up".

Wow there are a lot of us from Utah - perhaps we should get together for coffee (or sprite, you know).

Big Love isn't played over here any more (didn't even know it was still running) but I can understand Mormons being upset if they felt their faith was disrespected.

Could you explain why the rituals are secret?

TIA

I do not have HBO and have never seen this show, but the first thing it reminded me of was the outrage against Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart when he and Schikaneder wrote and composed (counterrespectively) "The Magic Flute."

It took me a while to educate me dh on those kind of things, but then again he was already a very tolerant guy. He was the one who first noticed that our neighboors a pagan.

Not really secret but sacred.

If the depiction of the rituals is as accurate as you say, how is the religion being "distorted"?
