"'South Park' Muhammad episode airs despite uproar

By DAVID BAUDER (AP) – 1 hour ago

NEW YORK — Comedy Central's "South Park" included a representation of the Prophet Muhammad as a character this week despite a radical Muslim group's warning that its producers could be killed.

Muhammad appeared on Wednesday night's episode of the cartoon with his body obscured by a black box, since Muslims consider a physical representation of their prophet to be blasphemous. Last week, the character was believed to be disguised in a bear costume. When that same costume was removed this week, Santa Claus appeared.

The bear costume had angered the New York-based group Revolution Muslim, which posted a message on its website saying that producers Trey Parker and Matt Stone had insulted their prophet.

The message included a gruesome picture of Theo Van Gogh, a Dutch filmmaker murdered by a Muslim extremist in 2004 after making a movie about a woman who rejected Muhammad's teachings. The message said the "South Park" producers would "probably wind up like Theo Van Gogh" for airing the show.

The posting included Comedy Central's New York address, as well as the address for Parker and Stone's California production studio."

Being a "South Park" fan, I have parts 1 and 2 on my DVR, and was wondering why suddenly the word "Muhammed" was bleeped out of part 2, when it had not been bleeped in part 1.

I just plain do NOT understand. Buddha was snorting coke through a rolled up dollar and I do not hear Buddhists screaming. Jesus was surfing internet porn. Krishna shapeshifted into NEIL DIAMOND. They bent over BACKWARD to be respectful to Muhammed while running all over every other religion's prophets. (Okay, they didn't have Cernunnos/Herne getting his horns stuck in an oak while in rut, but they TOTALLY should have!)

Additionally,

..........it totally wasn't even Muhammed in the Bear Suit, it was Santa Claus pretending to be Muhammed because Kyle promised Jesus that they wouldn't take Muhammed out of the U-Haul. See? TOTALLY respectful ;)

I agree. This is one of those tempests in a teapot crap. Get real. It's HUMOR, people! Everybody takes their licks on South Park, LOL! :D Or should! :P I really wish they *hadn't* kowtowed to this threat and allowed this kind of violent blackmail censorship. >>:=\\This is HUMOR, doofuses! Threats of murder just show what a bunch of whack jobs extremists those people are. They need to not take themselves so seriously. Eye roll.

And YEESH did you see Jon Stewart go OFF on the group on last night's Daily Show??? =D

I loved it. The group is based in NYC and they enjoy their protected rights to laugh at people's deaths, pray for death to our politicians, all the while insisting that the same country they're damning for giving them enough freedom to damn them not even draw a picture of their prophet or there will be death to pay.

It is the stupidest thing I've ever heard of.

I would say it has to do with the fact that Muslim extremists are more likely to follow thru on a treat. Christians would organize letter writing or other protests, as well non-extremist Muslims. Most likely a network calling it, not wanting to see violence.

Oh, I agree, I'm sure it was Comedy Central's call, and I'm sure that's why. And I made the HORRIFIC mistake of going to Revolution Muslim's website to see what (if anything) they had to say for themselves and was treated to a photograph which broke part of my soul permanently. Before I scrolled down far enough to encounter that unexpected bit of horror, the quote seemed to explain that they were not threatening this kind of violence, just informing Matt and Trey that OTHER groups were likely to perform this kind of violence. I didn't read further because then I encountered that photo and had to flee fast and go vomit.

I'm not sure what I'd do in the position of Comedy Central. I'd probably be just as torn between wanting to protect my employees and finding it heinously unfair that a show which has been doggedly equal-opportunity in its mockery of everyone and everything is forced to stop treating people equally.

"...forced to stop treating people equally."

This is the exact intent from these arrogant fundamentalist groups. There is not equality or mutual respect in either their intent or beliefs. Simple domination by threat of whatever kind will shut others up, is their purpose. The primitive threats of violence show their true colors and ugliness, and their brutality and arrogance that they, and only they, have the "right answers" or "right beliefs." Sick. Depraved, even. And they get away with stuff like this in civilized countries and cultures who believe in free speech and so forth, when the underlying intent is to dominate and destroy all but their own way of life or belief.

Thanks for the link! :)) I hadn't seen the article. Good for them! :D It was a stupid move to back down from these threatening common bullies. Just encourages them. Not a good move. Comedy Central needs to "grow some," IMO.

Thing is though, Theo van Gogh WAS actually murdered. People ARE actually being killed over stuff like this.

While I wish Comedy Central hadn't given in to this sort of terrorism, I can see why they did.
