""A Catholic nun and longtime administrator of St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix was reassigned in the wake of a decision to allow a pregnancy to be ended in order to save the life of a critically ill patient.

The decision also drew a sharp rebuke from Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted, head of the Phoenix Diocese, who indicated the woman was "automatically excommunicated" because of the action.""

She was ELEVEN weeks pregnant and DYING. A fetus that young has never lived when the mother has died. In fact, according to some interpretations of the bible, the "quickening" hasn't even happened yet and the fetus technically isn't even a "person" yet.

So, yes, by all means, let's let BOTH the mother AND baby die, instead of saving one. That's what Jesus would do. Choose death. Death for EVERYONE. We COULD save one life, but that would confuse people who only understand black and white issues, so EVERYONE DIES! YAY!

I consider that nun to be courageous.

I know.
Which is horrible and some major double speak.

To say that the death of the fetus in the course of treatment is ok, but ending the pregnancy to prevent death is not ok is crazy. Wouldn't engaging in a course of treatment you know to be fatal to the fetus be the same?

I don't think it is wrong to view the mother and fetus as equal lives, but when you get down to it just because you view them as equal doesn't mean you shouldn't save the one you can save.

I remember discussing this issue in my youth, and I read that the Catholic position was "better two deaths than one murder".

Just one of many, many reaons why I am no longer Catholic.

UGH!!!!

There is no practical difference between pulling the feeding tube from a dying person (which they did to their LAST POPE!) and ending a pregnancy in a dying woman (whose fetus would then also die).

Saw this on Aol, the women in this case has 5 children already. So had Bishop Olmstead had his way this women would have died and left 5 kids motherless.

And *he* would not have been the one to have to financially support and raise the kids left behind, either...of course! :||

Filing this under "Reasons Why Catholicism Must Change Or Die."

No decent human being with a fraction of a soul would have let this woman die with an 11-week-old pregnancy. If Catholicism wishes to keep representing decent human beings with fractions of souls at least, it needs to start ACTING like it's run by decent human beings with fraction of souls, at least.
