So do I. Especially after discovering that it's not a mosque, it's an Islamic Cultural Center. The Mosque is two blocks over, and has been there for 40 years - since before the Twin Towers were built.

There seems to be a lot of controversy about this. To me, this is another opportunity to stand up for the founding principles of our country. We have still a long way to go to really *BE* this nation that supports individual rights and freedoms. Each step to bring such principles to reality nearly always seems to be a huge struggle. This is one of those struggles we are currently working on as a nation. This one's about the freedom of religion. Freedom in this nation to all to practice the religion of his/her choice, while at the same respecting the rights of others to do the same, with mutual respect and tolerance for each other. To live peacefully together, amongst our differences. As I see it, this situation is an opportunity to live up to this high ideal our founders set for us so long ago...

"Obama was focusing on religious freedom and civil rights rather than the feelings of victims' families and public opinion"

This is criticism? Sounds like praise to me. That's exactly what a president *should* be focusing on.

From 2002 to 2006 I used to play NTN Trivia at a bar on Murray Street, three blocks north of what used to be the World Trade Center. When I first played there, a lot of the street signs were still bent and pitted from the collapse of the buildings, it was that close and that recent.

Anyhow, next door to that place is a strip club. How come no one is complaining about a strip club being 3 blocks away from Ground Zero? Is the magic number of blocks away from controversy somewhere between 2 and 3? Is it more OK with some people to have a strip club near Ground Zero than a Muslim cultural center?

I've had similar conversations with my mother, who is deeply opposed to it, but cannot come up with a reason which doesn't seem far-fetched. She knows all Muslims aren't like the terrorists, but her fear is that terrorists will "get to" this cultural center and operate safely from inside, unbeknownst to the well-meaning Muslims running it.

She's not got a reason why, though, that the terrorists, if they were going to do such a thing, would not have been able to do exactly that with the Mosque two blocks away from the proposed cultural center which has been in that location for longer than the Twin Towers have existed.

My family all live in NY and NJ, so it is close to our hearts. I'm not sure how they all feel about it, we don't really discuss it, except that my mother and I were in a car together when the news came on the radio, and she expressed disgust and I expressed gratitude. Then we had to have another of our "Why gay people should/shouldn't be able to get married" discussions, but less productive.

I'm as perplexed as the outreach leaders who held out hands and had them smacked.

Also, there were more innocent Muslims who worked in the towers who were killed in the attack than there were terrorists. One of them was a fellow employee of the company I worked for (I did not know him - there were 30,000 Pitney Bowes employees at the time).

FWIW, my wife does not think that the cultural center should be in the area, but at least we agree on supporting gay marriage.

And now I've just seen all sorts of videos and articles and blogs about how Muslims build mosques over Christian and Jewish sites they've conquered, and therefore that's what they're doing in NYC.

1. IT'S NOT A MOSQUE! It may CONTAIN one, but it also contains a basketball court and a cafeteria.

2. Oh, a conquering religion tore down existing religious structures and built its own over them? I wonder where they got THAT idea from?

These people are unrecognizable to me. Are we going to lock up everyone who looks Muslim in camps like we did with the Japanese? Are we EVER going to learn?
