OK this may not interest most of ya'll but you never know who is lurking...

The SBC (not Southwestern Bell Psycho :)) is pulling out of the Baptist World Alliance for liberal agendas in a very board generalization.

I find it interesting that BWA is bringing up funding instead of addressing the issues on why at least in the articles I have found. On a side note, SBC helped start this alliance as well is a good portion of it's funding.

Anyone else have more info about this?

Thanks for the reminder, ;-)

I wish I had more information, but I didn't even know there WAS a Baptist World Alliance. I thought Baptist was Baptist was Baptist. Man, I need to educate myself.

There are different conventions depending on regions and on some and I do mean SOME differences.

The BWA was founded by I believe the SBC, ABC (American Baptist convention), and the NBC (Northern Baptist Convention).

I am not surprised by the decision and on the issues I have read about I am in agreement.

i found out about it on foxnews.com and then if you go the baptist standard you will see some stuff.

but it's being somewhat vague. i will say that if i didn't hear about it at church it was something that one was considered a big deal or two the convention agreed to it on a whole

i am thinking it's not considered that big of a deal

INDIANAPOLIS- The Southern Baptist Convention voted Tuesday to quit the Baptist World Alliance following complaints that some members of the loose, global association had adopted liberal theology and "anti-American" thinking.

The SBC is the world's largest Baptist denomination and America's largest Protestant body, with 16.3 million members. It helped launch the alliance 99 years ago and was a strong supporter before shifting toward strict conservatism a quarter-century ago.

The pullout, proposed by the SBC executive committee on the basis of a negative December task force report, was approved overwhelmingly by a show of hands.

The alliance, based in Falls Church, Va., is a federation of 46 million Baptists in 211 denominations. The SBC pullout means the loss of a third of its income base.

"Our concern is not financial," said the Rev. Denton Lotz, general secretary of the world alliance. "Our concern is schism and division. Christians need to be a united voice."

The December report complained that some in the alliance had questioned "the truthfulness of Holy Scripture," refused to affirm the necessity of conscious faith in Jesus Christ for salvation, promoted women preachers, criticized the SBC and its foreign mission board and adopted an "anti-American" tone.

The last straw came in 2003, when the alliance accepted as a member the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, a rival group to the SBC formed by moderates who oppose denominational leaders' conservative policies.

Prior to Tuesday's vote, Paige Patterson, president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, said the SBC should not give money or endorsement to an organization that includes liberals.

He also complained that the American Baptist Churches, a U.S. denomination, includes "gay-friendly congregations," and that other members of the world alliance call the inerrancy of Scripture into question.

In other Tuesday business, thousands of attendees were to elect a new SBC president; the only announced candidate is the Rev. Bobby Welch of Daytona Beach, Fla. They also expected to hear a video greeting from President Bush. And an evening program will urge Baptists to promote voter registration and work against gay marriage.

Hey! I feel pretty qualified in religious debate! I have 3 Mormon sisters, a Catholic brother, a Pagan brother, a Baptist sister and two brothers, and a Seventh Day Baptist brother and 2 sisters. Not to mention my grandmother being Catholic, Grandpa was Baptist and my parents are pretty much Charismatic, when they can be called anything. Oh, and my aunt's an atheist, uncle's a free mason (which he says is religion enough for him), other aunt is Baptist and cousin is 7th day Adventist. I grew up going every other weekend to a Catholic church with Gram or the Fundamental Baptist church with Grandpa.

I could debate with myself for hours!

ETA--- oh yeah- and I'm Episcopalian.... :-)
